Notes: Bi2(Zn1/3Nb2/3)2O7 (BZN) thin films were prepared by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. For films in situ deposited on indium–tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates, the crystalline phase can be obtained by growing at a substrate temperature (Ts) higher than 475 °C. Too low a substrate temperature (Ts〈400 °C) results in the amorphous phase, whereas too high a temperature (Ts〉600 °C) leads to substantial interaction between the BZN film and the ITO layer. For the films deposited at a 500 °C substrate temperature, the texture characteristics change with their thickness. The films are (222) preferentially oriented when they are thin, and (400) preferentially oriented when they are thick. The optical properties, measured using optical spectroscopy, reveal that the index of refraction (n) and absorption coefficient (κ) vary between n=2.08−2.51 and κ=1.22×10−5−1.88×10−4 nm−1, respectively. These optical parameters do not change significantly with the preferred orientation and thickness of the films. However, the low frequency dielectric properties are closely correlated with the material's characteristics. The crystalline BZN films have a markedly larger dielectric constant than the amorphous films. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fatigue properties of (Pb0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 (PSrTO) thin films deposited using (La0.5Sr0.5)MnO3 (LSMO) materials as buffer layer were compared with those of the films grown using (La0.5Sr0.5)CoO3 (LSCO) materials as buffer layer. The extent of degradation induced by polarization switching for 1×1010 cycles with 210 kV/cm maximum field, which is four times of coercive field (Ec), is less pronounced for PSrTO/LSMO/Pt(Si) thin films than that for PSrTO/LSCO/Pt(Si) films. This phenomenon is ascribed to the smaller strain induced in PSrTO/LSMO/Pt(Si) materials. Moreover, the pulse response testing indicates that the degradation of the films mainly occurs at PSrTO-to-LSMO (or PSrTO-to-LSCO) interface. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ni–P–B ultrafine amorphous alloy particles have been prepared by chemical reaction of nickel chloride, sodium hypophosphite, and potassium borohydride in aqueous solution. Two samples prepared at different initial pH values (pH=5 and 9) have been characterized by different experimental methods. X-ray and electron diffraction indicated that both samples were amorphous in nature, and transmission electron microscopy gave average diameters of 50 and 30 nm for particles prepared at pH=5 and 9, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that nickel and phosphorus existed exclusively in their elemental states, while boron existed mainly in its elemental state but with some trace of its oxide on the surface. The crystallization process of the amorphous samples was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and by x-ray diffraction after annealing the samples at various temperatures. The results are correlated with the microstructure of the as-prepared samples. It is found that when the initial pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 9, the pH value can be maintained automatically throughout the reaction and the sample thus formed has a fairly homogeneous microstructure.

Notes: By depositing a buffer layer of Al2O3 on GaAs, we have been able to laser ablate a superconducting film of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x overtop. The onset of superconductivity is 92 K and zero resistance is observed at 80 K in a structure with a suitably annealed Al2O3 film which is converted to AlGaO3. Both the Al2O3-GaAs and the Al2O3-Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x interfaces are remarkably well preserved with virtually no interdiffusion or interaction. The Al2O3 or homolog AlGaO3 film also prevents decomposition of the GaAs at the deposition temperature of 730 °C.

Notes: In this article, the auto-Bäcklund transformation of the sine-Gordon equation is formulated as a gauge transformation acting on the Lax connection and preserving its form. This gauge transformation contains the known Darboux transformation as a special case. Therefore the auto-Bäcklund transformation is a dressinglike symmetry but of a different kind in general than the dressing transformation. Only in the case of the transformation between the vacuum and one-soliton solution are these two kinds of transformations equivalent. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The classical Rayleigh–Taylor instability for an interface of finite extent is modified by two independently controlled perturbation effects. A component of gravitational acceleration tangent to the interface is imposed and the interface is subjected to a flow-induced pressure field. The stability of the flat horizontal interface when surface tension holds heavier liquid above ambient gas is considered in a 2D model problem. The two perturbations are realized by tilting the interface to the horizontal and by inducing a flow with shear. It is found that the effect of tilt angle or shear on its own is destabilizing, while together, in the right combination, they can stabilize. It is thereby shown how to extend the stability limit over the classical Rayleigh–Taylor result. The framework for the analysis is the classical unperturbed pitchfork bifurcation (codimension 2). The coefficients in the unfolding are calculated by applying the Lyapunov–Schmidt technique to a pinned deformable interface that holds a shear-induced lubrication flow. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the performance characteristics of InGaAs/GaAs strained-layer superlattice coplanar ridge-type directional couplers realized by molecular beam epitaxy. The measured power transfer characteristics with 1.15 μm incident photoexcitation demonstrate nonlinear coupling due to absorption associated with the tails of the excitonic resonances in the quantum wells. From a theoretical fit of the measured data, the nonlinear refractive index coefficient, n2, of the multiquantum well is found to be 2.25×10−7 cm2/W. This agrees very well with a value of n2=1.9×10−7 cm2/W obtained independently on the same material from interferometric measurements.

Notes: The electro-optic effect and phase modulation in In0.2 Ga0.8 As/GaAs multiple quantum wells have been experimentally studied for the first time. The experiments were done with 1.06 and 1.15 μm photoexcitation which are, respectively, 25 and 115 meV below the electron–heavy hole excitonic resonance. Strong quadratic electro-optic effect was observed near the excitonic edge in addition to the linear effect. These are characterized by r63 =−1.85×10−19 m/V and (R33 −R13 )=2.9×10−19 m2 /V2 . In addition, we observe a dispersion in the value of r63 . The relative phase shifts are higher in the strained system at 1.06 μm than in lattice-matched GaAs/AlGaAs.
