Notes: Conclusions 1. The proposed method of manufacturing sections of outsized penstocks for hydrostations from individual longitudinal segments eliminates the construction of specialized shops equipped with roller stands and reduces the production areas. 2. A technicoeconomic comparison of the technological process of manufacturing the sections by the traditional and new methods shows that the number of technological operations and labor intensity by the proposed method are 30–40% less than in the case of assembling sections from cylindrical shells. 3. It is necessary to perfect the technology of manufacturing sections from segments in order to reduce welding deformations.

Notes: Conclusions 1. It is suggested to extend the requirement of SNiP concerning the conduction of hydraulic tests of steel penstocks to penstocks embedded in rock or concrete. 2. Embedded penstocks should be tested after concreting. It is necessary to examine the steel shell from the inside immediately after emptying. 3. It is recommended to use a test pressure not less than the design pressure. 4. It is necessary to find a grouting method that does not disturb the soundness of the penstock shell.

Notes: Conclusion The scheme developed for operating high-head segmented gates on eccentric supports by means of temporary installations, as has been highly recommended, may also be employed on other construction projects in similar situations.

Notes: Conclusions 1. A technology has been developed for the assembly and welding of penstocks made of high-strength steel 14Kh2GMR, which ensures that the required mechanical properties are obtained in the welded connections and that an adequate technological strength is achieved. 2. Mechanized equipment has been developed which meets the requirements of technological processes and ensures high-quality production of turbine penstocks out of high-strength steel. 3. A multiplicity of scientific-research work and experience accumulated with the use of steel 14Kh2GMR in fabricating the penstocks at the Nurek station, have shown the possibility of wide application of high-strength steels in hydrotechnical construction. The use of such steels instead of the usual low-alloy steels with a yield point of 30 to 35 kgf/mm2, widens the engineering possibilities in designs of modern large-capacity high-head hydroelectric stations.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Whereas in the traditional technology the shell segments were manufactured only on powerful rolls, the proposed method permits manufacturing the longitudinal sectors also by stamping. 2. The proposed method of fabricating links of outsize penstocks from longitudinal segments permits dispensing with the construction of specialized shops and considerably reduces the area of production facilities during construction. 3. The engineering possibilities of fabricating links from longitudinal segments permits transferring all works under the ground, where atmospheric conditions (rain and negative temperature) do not affect the performance of the works. Underground conditions permit creating a continuous conveyor of assembly works and achieving good results even at construction projects in the Far North and Siberia.
