    Notes: A steady state convective-diffusion equation is solved using a collocation method to find the concentration profile and flux of adsorbing particles near a particle adsorbed on the plane surface. At small values of the gravity number, NG=πd4Δρ/6kT, the concentration profile and flux vary slowly near the preadsorbed particle, while they are highly nonuniform at large values of NG. The effect of the position of the system boundary on the collocation calculation is discussed and it is shown how the concept of flux balance may be used to improve the accuracy of the results. Finally, we develop two fitting functions at high and low values of NG, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a computer simulation and theoretical study of a ballistic deposition process in which spheres are incident on a planar surface. Each incoming sphere follows a path of steepest descent which may involve rolling over the surface of preadsorbed spheres. All particles reaching a stable, elevated position are removed. The frequency of the various rolling mechanisms are evaluated as a function of coverage. The addition mechanism generates clusters of connected spheres by accretion and coalescence. We evaluate the dependence of the cluster size distribution and coalescence probability on coverage. Various peaks in the radial distribution function of the deposited layer provide a signature for the deposition mechanism. The asymptotic approach to saturation is shown to be of the form θ∞−θ(t) ∝exp[−(4/π)Smt]/t2, where Sm=(square root of)3/2 is the smallest possible target area. The expression is shown to be consistent with the simulation results. Interpolants, which accurately describe the time-dependent coverage over the entire coverage range, are developed based on the exact expressions for the asymptotic and low coverage kinetics.

    Notes: Epitaxial La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films were grown on MgO (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The as-grown films exhibit a metal–insulator transition at temperatures ranging from 200 to 230 K. Surprisingly, the transition temperature of postannealed films under O2 at 900 °C decreases by more than 100 K, featured with the colossal magnetoresistance. The O2 annealed films also show thermal hysteresis in resistivity and nonlinear I–V behavior. These results are interpreted in terms of Mn deficiency induced by large structural difference between film and substrate, and also discussed in viewpoint of a percolative phase transition. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the changing pattern of rectal cancers in Korea and to identify prognostic factors, we investigated the case histories of 1446 rectal cancer patients who had received surgical treatment. During the study period there were trends toward a decrease in the ratio of rectal cancer to colon cancer, earlier detection (more Dukes' stages A and B and fewer C), a decrease in the number of abdominoperineal resections, and an increase in the number of sphincter-preserving operations. Univariate analysis of prognostic factors showed that gender, obstruction symptoms, preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level, tumor size, depth of bowel wall invasion, lymph node metastases (presence and number), tumor differentiation, operative method, and date of operation were significant, but age, symptom duration, and tumor location were not. The use of sphincter-saving operations did not adversely affect the clinical outcome. Multivariate analysis showed lymph node metastasis factor to be the most significant factor (P〈0.001); the depth of bowel wall invasion, differentiation, CEA level, and date of operation were also significant (0.001〈P〈0.05). This study shows that although anatomical extent of disease (depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis) is the most reliable prognostic predictor in rectal cancer, other factors such as preoperative CEA level and tumor differentiation also provide important information on the outcome and use of an anal-preserving operation does not adversely affect the patient survival.

    Notes: Abstract  Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyps in the small bowel and mucocutaneous pigmentation. Patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome often present as surgical emergencies with complications of the polyps, such as intussusception, bowel obstruction, and bleeding. Recently an increased risk of malignancies has also been reported. This study was initiated to determine the clinical features of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in Korean patients, with special attention to the development of malignancies. Thirty patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome were investigated; their median age was 23.5 years, and symptoms appeared at a median age of 12.5 years. Family history was positive in one-half of cases, and mucocutaneous pigmentation was observed in almost all patients (93%). The jejunoileum was the most frequent site of the polyps, and there were generally 10–100 polyps. Multiple laparotomies were performed in a substantial portion of the patients, due mainly to polyp-induced bowel obstruction, and the surgical interventions were begun at a relatively young age (average 21.4 years). Four cases of small-bowel cancer and one case of breast cancer were detected in probands, at a relatively young age (mean 36 years). Cancers of the small bowel, stomach, colon, breast and cervix were diagnosed in the first relatives of the probands. Close follow-up from an early age should thus be performed in patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome as they are at high risk of surgical emergency and development of malignancy.

    Notes: Summary The corpus luteum periodicum (c.l.p.) of the bitch was studied using enzyme histochemistry, clinical and biochemical methods. Assessment of variations of the serum progesterone level during different stages of the ovarian cycle and the study of enzymatic activity of the luteal tissue furnished informations on vitality and biosynthetic capacity of luteinizing cells: The period of functional activity of the c.l.p. nearly ceased about day 60 of the cycle (proestrus included) in the animals examined. In the light microscope the neo-synthesis of progesterone in the c.l.-tissue can be made visible by histochemical demonstration of the activity of Delta5-3 beta-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenase (3 beta-HSD) only up to a progesterone level exceeding 6.7 ng/ml plasma. The data obtained contribute to our baseline knowledge of the mechanism involved in the etiology of pseudopregnancylike conditions in the bitch.
