Notes: [Auszug] Not so readily explained was the observation that in the mutant 5/520 the stereoconfiguration of protetrahydrolycopene and prolycopene can become unstable also in red light, which is not absorbed by carotenes. This phenomenon requires irradiation in a nitrogen atmosphere, absence of oxygen alone ...

Notes: Abstract.  This study investigates how the information environment in the Danish 2000 euro referendum campaign served to crystallize opinion on the issue within the context of a number of other hypothesized influences on the vote, based on previous studies of referendum voting. Our data include a nationally representative two-wave panel survey and a content analysis of news coverage during the referendum campaign. We develop a weighted measure of exposure to news on public and private television channels, that takes into account the volume and tone of the coverage towards the YES and NO campaigns, and using this we find that exposure to public television news significantly influences vote choice when controlling for other predictors. We also find varied levels of support for hypotheses concerning the influence of other key variables such as ideology, economic evaluations, government approval and issue-specific contextual variables. The findings emphasize the importance of considering the information environment during referendum campaigns.

Notes: Abstract Circulating 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25OHD3) levels are low in Saudi Arabia due to a lack of sunlight exposure and a low dietary intake of vitamin D (vit D). Recent studies in animals and man indicate that the half-life of 25OHD3 is reduced in states of hyperparathyroidism. We, therefore, reviewed the charts of 43 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) to establish whether there was coexisting vit D deficiency and osteomalacia. In the 22 patients studied, 25OHD3 levels were below normal in 14 and in the low normal range in 7, and the 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D3] levels were inappropriately low in 8 of the 9 studied. Three of the 13 patients with classical “parathyroid” bone disease had evidence of osteomalacia with Looser's nodes or rickets. We conclude that patients with primary HPT are likely to develop vit D deficiency in countries in which 25OHD3, stores are low. In selected cases, preoperative treatment with vit D might diminish subsequent bone hunger.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei Normalpersonen und Patienten mit Keratoconjunctivitis sicca wurden mit einer Fluoreszeinverdünnungsmethode Tränenvolumenmessungen durchgeführt.
Notes: Summary Tear volume measurements were made in normal individuals and in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca using a fluorescein dilution method. The mean tear volume in normals was found to be 6.5±0.3μl (S.E.M.) with a range of 3.4 to 10.7 μl. In sixteen eyes with keratoconjunctivitis sicca most of the values were moderately decreased with a mean of 4.8±0.4μl and a range of 2.9 to 8.0μl. This decrease seems to manifest itself primarily as a reduction of the tear meniscus. Among the keratoconjunctivitis sicca patients there was no correlation between the values of volume and the results of the Schirmer test or the degree of Rose bengal staining. On the basis of average Schirmer test values for unstimulated tear secretion (“basic secretion”), the tear secretion rate was estimated to range from 0.6 to 1.1μl/min in normals, and from virtually zero to 0.2μl/min in the patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
