Notes: The observation of unusually enhanced optical absorbance spectra of ionic self assembled multilayer (ISAM) thin films composed of alternating layers of Pt nanoclusters (〈1 nm dimension) and polymer dye is reported. The first bilayer absorbance is found to be considerably larger than that of several succeeding bilayers even though there is no difference in composition for each bilayer. A layer-by-layer-dependent redshift in maximum wavelength position due to the strong coupling of metals and polymer molecules is observed. The saturation absorption is obtained for the first time when the required thickness of the ISAM film is deposited. The large and unusual enhancement effects are attributed to both the charge-transfer mechanism and very large local fields and collective phenomena near the surface of the small metal clusters/electrolytes and at the interfaces between the cluster/polymer multilayers. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Monolayer and multilayer ultrathin films comprised of nanosized iron oxide (Fe3O4) particles and polyimide molecules have been fabricated on single crystal silicon and quartz substrates by a novel layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly process. This process involves the alternate dipping of a substrate into an aqueous solution of anionic polyimide precursor (polyamic acid salt, PAATEA), followed by dipping into an aqueous solution of polycation polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) which coats on nanoscale Fe3O4 particles as a stabilizer. The growth process and the structure have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, contact angle, and ellipsometry measurements. The results suggest that well-ordered uniform monolayer and multilayer magnetic films have been formed on silicon and silica surfaces. A recently developed highly sensitive fiber optic magnetic field sensor was used to probe the small magnetic field intensity produced by the multilayer films. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Single mode optical fiber waveguide has been used to determine the two-dimensional strain distribution on a simply supported rectangular plate. Each of the fifty individual fibers in the rectangular grid array attached to one surface of the plate yields a measurement of the strain integrated along the length of that fiber on the specimen. By using similar sensor information from all of the fibers, both the functional form and the amplitude of the distribution may be determined. Limits on the dynamic range and spatial resolution are indicated. Applications in the measurement of internal strain and the monitoring of physically small critical-structural components are suggested.

Notes: Abstract Alternate layers of Al2O3 and ZrO2 nanocomposite films were prepared on silicon wafers and glass substrates at room temperature using the electrostatic self-assembly monolayer (ESAM) process. The versatile approach of the ESAM process provides the possibility of integrating diverse inorganic colloids on the nanosize level in a layer-by-layer or block-by-block fashion. Further, it allows the combination of inorganic colloids and organic molecules, making it possible to fabricate thick films with large pores and good stress relaxation. Highly ordered, micron-thick films have been formed, sintered, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and ellipsometry. There is no significant visible crack formation for Al2O3–ZrO2 composite films after heat treatment at 1200°C for 2 h, although significant thickness reduction occurs. The hardness and Young's modulus of these films before and after sintering were measured using nanoindentation techniques.

Description / Table of Contents: Two methods have been developed in order to determine the water sorbed to a solid adsorbent out of an aqueous solution. The sorption of water to γ-Al2O3 out of pure water corresponds approximately to a two-molecular layer of H2O on the surface. Up to three times as much water is sorbed out of a weak solution of electrolytes. With higher concentrations of electrolytes, the water sorption decreases linearly with increasing ion adsorption, so far as cations and anions are bound in approximately equivalent amounts. Cations additionally bound because of exchange with Al3+-ions do not influence the water sorption.
