Notes: Abstract In the prospect of producing autologous antigen presenting cells (APC) to actively immunize patients with cancer against their own tumor we were interested in the in vitro generation of MC and/or dendritic cells. We observed that the best yielding in CD14+ cells was obtained by adding SCF and GM-CSF into RPMI 1640 completed medium and by using Teflon bags as culture-containers. The others growth factors tested (LIF, IL3 and M-CSF) were useless in term of production of macrophages. After a month of culture we usually obtained an average of 80% of CD14, CD33, CD64, CD11a, CD11b, CD11c and HLA-DR positive cells expressing the MGG staining phenotype of MC. For DC the best association of growth factors combined GM-CSF, IL4 and SCF. Hence we could obtained at least 60% of CD1a+, CD14-, CD54+, CD58+, CD80+ and HLA DR+ dendritic cells.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a polyfunctional cytokine integrated in cytokine networks and its concentration has been shown to be elevated in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of patients with the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The aim of our study was to evaluate the production of LIF by culturing blood cells from patients with ARDS. Patients: 8 patients with ARDS, 8 patients with pneumonia and 5 healthy subjects. Measurements and results: The blood samples were taken on day 1 after onset of ARDS. LIF was measured, in the cell-free supernatant, with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay after 24 h, 48 h and 72 h of blood cell culture. LIF was detectable in some patients in the ARDS group: at i) at 24 h and 48 h: in 2 patients ii) at 72 h in 4/5 patients (140 ± 231 pg/ml). Only in the 4 patients in whom LIF was measured at 72 h was ARDS associated with the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Furthermore, among the 5 patients with ARDS who subsequently died, 4 had a detectable LIF. Conclusions: We have observed that LIF was produced only in ARDS, but not in all patients. The production of LIF seems to be a good indicator of the severity of ARDS. These preliminary results must be confirmed by a larger study.

Notes: Abstract. We present a detailed discussion of the evolution of a statistical ensemble of quantum mechanical systems coupled weakly to a bath. The Hilbert space of the full system is given by the tensor product between the Hilbert spaces associated with the bath and the bathed system. The statistical states of the ensemble are described in terms of density matrices. Supposing the bath to be held at some - not necessarily thermal - statistical equilibrium and tracing over the bath degrees of freedom, we obtain reduced density matrices defining the statistical states of the bathed system. The master equations describing the evolution of these reduced density matrices are derived under the most general conditions. On time scales that are large with respect to the bath correlation time $\tau_{B}^{\mathrm{corr}}$ and with respect to the reciprocal transition frequencies of the bathed system, the resulting evolution of the reduced density matrix of the bathed system is of Markovian type. The detailed balance relations valid for a thermal equilibrium of the bath are derived and the conditions for the validity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem are given. Based on the general approach, we investigate the non-linear response of the bathed subsystem to a time-periodic perturbation. Summing the perturbation series we obtain the coherences and the populations for arbitrary strengths of the perturbation.

Notes: Abstract We present systematic Density Functional Theory-Local Density Approximation computations for neutral Magnesium clusters Mg n withn≤13. For the smaller sizes the ground state structure is optimized starting from selected symmetries and allowing for relaxation, Jahn-Teller distorsion and spin polarization. For the larger sizes we perform a simulated annealing based on the ab-initio Molecular Dynamics. By the same method, we study the thermal and dynamical properties of Mg10 and Mg16. The general picture emerging from these computations shows that already atn ≈10 these clusters have acquired many characteristic features of metallic Magnesium.

Description / Table of Contents: Mg2PN3 and Ca2PN3 - Phosphorus(V) Nitrides with Infinite Chains of Corner Sharing PN4 TetrahedraMg2PN3 and Ca2PN3 have been synthesized by the reaction of the respective metal nitrides with P3N5 at 800°C. The products have been obtained as fine crystalline powders. The crystal structures have been determined on the basic of powder diffraction data. Mg2PN3 (Cmc21, a = 972,64(8), b = 564,30(5), c = 473,02(2) pm, Z = 4) and Ca2PN3 (Cmca, a = 519,14(4), b = 1031,63(8), c = 1128,8(1) pm, Z = 8) contain Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, respectively, as well as PN3 Zweier chains of corner sharing PN4 tetrahedra. A significant difference of the stretching factor of the PN3 chains has been observed in Mg2PN3 (fs = 0,88) and Ca2PN3 (fs = 1,0).
Mg2PN3 (Cmc21, a = 972,64(8), b = 564,30(5), c = 473,02(2) pm, Z = 4) und Ca2PN3 (Cmca, a = 519,14(4), b = 1031,63(8), c = 1128,8(1) pm, Z = 8) enthalten im Festkörper Mg2+- bzw.
