Notes: The magnetic susceptibility of the new cobalt-based dilute magnetic semiconductor Zn1−x Cox S was measured for concentrations 0.03≤x≤0.103 and temperatures 22 mK≤T≤4.2 K. A paramagnetic-to-spin-glass transition was found for all samples. In contrast to the behavior in the manganese-based compounds, the freezing temperatures in this material could not be fitted to a simple power-law dependence on concentration. This difference is discussed in terms of an additional long-range dipolar coupling.

Notes: We have performed ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements on the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1−xMnxTe. The measurements clearly indicate spin glass behavior. For an x=0.4 sample, the data for the imaginary part of the complex susceptibility (χ″) was analyzed according to conventional power-law dynamics and good scaling was obtained with Tc=13.4±0.2 K, zν=10.5±1.0, and β=0.9±0.2. These values of zν and β are consistent with results obtained in other spin glass systems. The scaling of the χ″ data was not as good when analyzed within the activated dynamics model. Magnetization measurements of an x=0.5 sample also showed a spin glass-like transition. Scaling of the nonlinear magnetization just above the transition gave Tc=20.8±0.2 K, and the critical exponent values β=0.8±0.2 and γ=4.0±1.0. This confirms the β value obtained from the ac measurements and the γ value is in fair agreement with reported values for other diluted magnetic semiconductor spin glass systems. We conclude that Zn1−xMnxTe and similar systems undergo equilibrium phase transitions to a spin glass state at low temperatures. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the magnetic properties of single-crystal Cd1−xCrxTe and Zn1−xCrxTe samples. The magnetization is anisotropic (∼7% for Zn1−xCrxTe and ∼0.4% for Cd1−xCrxTe) with the (111) direction having the greatest value. We have found that the magnetic behavior in fields up to 6 T and temperatures between 1.5 and 324 K for both systems is well described by a theoretical model with crystal field, Jahn–Teller, spin-orbit, and spin-spin terms including ligand field corrections to the spin-orbit and spin-spin parameters. Good agreement was found between the experimental results and the theoretical calculations for a Jahn–Teller splitting of 370 and 320 cm−1 and effective spin-orbit parameters of −49.9 and −59.4 cm−1 for Cd1−xCrxTe and Zn1−xCrxTe, respectively. The key feature is an orbital singlet, S=2 ground state with a small splitting (1.5 K for Cd1−xCrxTe and 12.4 K for Zn1−xCrxTe) of the ms states. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic susceptibility measurements have been made on the chalcopyrite diluted magnetic semiconductor (CuIn)1−xMn2xTe2 for concentrations 0.01≤x≤0.101 and temperatures 33 mK≤T≤300 K. Samples with x(approximately-greater-than)0.05 had similar values of the effective nearest-neighbor exchange constant, with Jeff/kB≈−18.5 K. The strength of Jeff fell sharply in samples with lower x, a characteristic not seen in wide band gap II–VI based alloys. Low-field ac susceptibility measurements showed spin-glass behavior. Analysis of freezing temperature Tf vs x data showed a possible crossover between different modes of exchange, coincident with the sharp drop in Jeff. Preliminary carrier concentration data suggests that the crossover may be driven by increased numbers of free holes in some samples.

Notes: Magnetic properties and the metal–insulator transition in CuIr2S4−xSex with x=0.0, 0.1, and 4.0 were investigated. CuIr2S3.9Se0.1 exhibits a transition from paramagnetism (M/H=+1.3×10−7 emu/g G) at higher temperatures to diamagnetism (M/H=−1.5×10−7 emu/g G) at lower temperatures and exhibits hysteresis on heating and cooling. The transition on warming in CuIr2S3.9Se0.1 occurs at a lower temperature (200 K) than in CuIr2S4 (218 K) and is not observed in CuIr2Se4. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We have developed a technique for growing unsaturated films of3He. Using this technique, films with thicknesses between 100 and 1500 Å were grown on a copper disk comprising the moment of a torsional oscillator. The films were thermally cycled between 0.35 and 100 mK over the course of several days and were found to be stable within 40 Å.
