Notes: The atomic structure of echovirus 1 (a member of the enterovirus genus of the picornavirus family) has been determined using cryo-crystallography and refined to 3.55 Å resolution. Echovirus 1 crystallizes in space group P22121 with a = 352.45, b = 472.15 and c = 483.20 Å. The crystals contain one full virus particle in the asymmetric unit allowing for 60-fold noncrystallographic symmetry averaging. The diffraction pattern shows strong pseudo-B-centering with reflections with h + l = 2n + 1 being systematically weak or absent below about 6 Å resolution. The size of the unit cell and presence of pseudo-B-centering placed strong constraints on the allowed packing of the icosahedral particle in the crystal lattice. These constraints greatly facilitated the determination of the orientation and position of the virus by reducing the dimensionality of the search, but interactions between the crystallographic and noncrystallographic symmetries rendered the choice of space group ambiguous until very late in the structure determination. This structure determination provides a striking example of the power of packing analysis in molecular replacement and illustrates how subtle interactions between crystallographic and noncrystallographic symmetries can be resolved.

Notes: Aims. Researchers must develop effective strategies for disseminating research-based treatments. This study evaluates the application of a dissemination model based on principles of social marketing and diffusion theory. Design. A case study describes how the model was implemented. A qualitative design was employed to examine rates of adoption and adaptation of an early intervention program by a targeted system of addictions agencies. Setting. The interventions were developed at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto and disseminated to Assessment and Referral (A/R) Centres in Ontario, Canada. Participants. Study participants included the managers and a designated therapist for 33 participating A/R centres. Measurements. Managers were asked mainly open-ended questions concerning whether their agency had made a formal decision to adopt the intervention and whether therapists in their agency were using the early intervention program. "Adoption" was operationalized as offering the complete four-session intervention to at least one client. Findings. At 12 months after the completion of training workshops, 68% of 34 agencies in the target system had adopted the program while 85% of the agencies were using some components of the intervention with clients. Conclusions. The dissemination model appeared to be effective although its application proved to be time-consuming and labour-intensive. The "market analysis", systems focus and field-test components of the model appeared to contribute to its success.

Notes: Abstract A new group of materials called the silicon lanthanide oxynitrides has been prepared by the reaction between Si3N4 and several oxides of the lanthanide series (La2O3, Sm2O3, Dy2O3, Er2O3, and Yb2O3). These oxides formed compounds of the type Si3N4 · R2O3 and R4Si2O7N2 (R being lanthanide). In addition La2O3 and Yb2O3 formed the compounds 2Si3N4 · La2O3 and Yb2Si3O5N2, respectively. Certain similarities in the unit cells of these compounds have been noted, and their structures are discussed in terms of similarity to known minerals. It is suggested that this group of materials contains a large number of compounds.

Notes: Abstract Examination of compositions in the system Si3N4-Y2O3-SiO2 using sintered samples revealed the existence of two regions of melting and three silicon yttrium oxynitride phases. The regions of melting occur at ∼1600° C at high SiO2 concentrations (∼13 mol% Si3N4 + 19 mol% Y2O3 + 68 mol% SiO2) and at 1650° C at high Y2O3 concentrations (25 mol % Si3N4 + 75 mol % Y2O3). Two ternary phases 4Y2O3 ·SiO2 ·Si3N4 and 10Y2O3 ·9SiO2 ·Si3N4 and one binary phase Si3N4 ·Y2O3 were observed. The 4Y2O3 ·SiO2 ·Si3N4 phase has a monoclinic structure (a= 11.038 Å, b=10.076 Å, c=7.552 Å, β=108° 40′) and appears to be isostructural with silicates of the wohlerite cuspidine series. The 10Y2O3 ·9SiO2 ·Si3N4 phase has a hexagonal unit cell (a=7.598 Å c=4.908 Å). Features of the Si3N4-Y2O3-SiO2 systems are discussed in terms of the role of Y2O3 in the hot-pressing of Si3N4, and it is suggested that Y2O3 promotes a liquid-phase sintering process which incorporates dissolution and precipitation of Si3N4 at the solid-liquid interface.
