    Notes: Summary Intracytoplasmic fibrillar inclusions, generally referred to as nucleolus-like bodies (NLBs) were studied by means of ultrastructural cytochemistry. The structure of these bodies was visualized by several different staining procedures: conventional electron microscopy and preferential staining methods for localization of various proteins including ribonucleoproteins, basic proteins, glycoproteins and phosphorylated proteins. The results of the cytochemical tests indicate that NLBs have an essentially proteinaceous nature. They consist of ribonucleoproteins, basic proteins and glycoproteins but do not contain phosphorylated proteins. These findings suggest that NLBs are, at least partially, of the same nature as nucleoli and coiled bodies. The origin of NLBs and their possible functional role is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Summary The presence and distribution of neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) was examined by light and electron microscopical immunocytochemistry in the descending thoracic aorta, the superior mesenteric artery and mesenteric arteries from fetal and adult rats (embryonic day 15 to post-natal day 90). In embryonic and early post-natal rats, N-CAM immunoreactivity was localized in perivascular nerves, in the smooth muscle cell plasma membrane and basal lamina. In nerves, N-CAM-immunoreactive sites were found associated with both the axon and Schwann cell membranes. N-CAM immunoreactivity was also found associated with the surface of adventitial fibroblast-like cells and with collagen fibrils, in regions where these fibrils were in contact with smooth muscle cells. In mature vessels N-CAM immunoreactivity was found to be restricted to the perivascular innervation and the surface of fibroblast-like cells. These observations indicate that N-CAM is expressed transiently in rat vascular tissues during development and is localized not only on the surface of smooth muscle cells but also in association with extracellular matrix components.

    Notes: Résumé L'ultrastructure des plaquettes a été étudiée à l'aide de différentes techniques de fixation, d'inclusion et de coloration. L'association de la fixation au permanganate de potassium, à l'inclusion à l' Araldite et à la coloration à l'acétate d'uranyl s'est montrée très utile pour l'étude de ces éléments du sang. Avec cette méthode nous avons mis en évidence le glycogène des plaquettes. Cette substance se présente sous l'aspect de grains de 180 à 200 Å, très denses, très abondants, dispersés ou formant des agrégats de plusieurs centaines de grains dans la substance fondamentale. Selon les observations réalisées, la membrane des plaquettes est identique aux membranes cellulaires. Nous n'avons reconnu á l'aide des différentes techniques employées, aucune couche que l'on puisse identifier á l'atmosphère plasmatique périplaquettaire de Roskam. Nous avons admis que certains phénomènes dont l'explication reposait sur l'existence de cette ≪ atmosphére ≫ peuvent être expliqués par la capacité phagocytaire des plaquettes. Dans le granulomére des plaquettes de sang humain normal nous avons observé des granules en baguette de tambour que nous admettons pouvoir être des constituants normaux des plaquettes.

    Notes: Summary The cellular localization of progesterone-binding protein (PBP) in the guinea-pig placenta was studied by use of immunocytochemical procedures. Within the chorioallantoic placenta, a strong positive reaction was observed in the interlobar and marginal trophoblast from the third week of gestation to term. PBP was localized in the cytoplasm of the syncytiotrophoblast, and the nuclei were never stained. At the ultrastructural level, the immunoreaction was associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus and the perinuclear space. No deposits were seen in any other cell organelles. This localization strongly suggests that the interlobar syncytium is related to PBP synthesis. In the labyrinth, a weak immunoreaction was observed by light microscopy around some blood lacunae. At the ultrastructural level the dense deposits were localized in vesicles located near the maternal lacunae. The distribution of PBP was also studied by light microscopy in other tissues from pregnant guinea-pig. No PBP, or PBP-like material, was detected inside cells from liver, muscle, heart, lung, kidney, ovary, and uterus. A weak immunoreaction for PBP was detected in vascularized zones of these organs. These observations strongly suggest that PBP, a protein related to gestation in the guinea-pig, is elaborated by the placental tissue of this hystricomorph rodent. PBP is the first steroid-binding plasma protein shown to be of extrahepatic origin.

    Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of the seminiferous tubules was studied in rats that had been subjected to whole body irradiation on the 19th day of gestation. The seminiferous tubules from 3 months-old irradiated animals are devoid of germ cells and contain only Sertoli cells. Compared with controls of the same age, the seminiferous tubule basal membrane is thickened and multilayered and several alterations are observed in the Sertoli cells. The most characteristic of these alterations are: (a) an abnormal number of nuclear heterochromatin clumps, (b) the presence of numerous cytoplasmic vacuoles and various sized lipid droplets, (c) elaborate interdigitations and junctions between adjacent cells, and (d) the presence of anomalous ectoplasmic specializations disposed perpendicularly to the Sertoli cell membrane.
