    Notes: Drug-induced erythema multiforme is reported with many antimicrobial and antipyretic medications. We present one patient who experienced erythema multiforme and urticaria after administration of pyrazinamide for treatment of cutaneous tuberculosis. The side-effects of pyrazinamide include hepatic or dermatologic disorders, but erythema multiforme has not yet, to our knowledge, been described. Clinical features and discontinuation and reintroduction of the drug led us to consider pyrazinamide the cause of the erythema multiforme, but allergologic studies remained negative, except for the presence of circulating immune complexes. The mechanism of this eruption remains obscure. and definite withdrawal of pyrazinamide seems to be the best therapeutic choice.

    Notes: Abstract In a follow-up study of 294 men who had worked for at least 6 months in a chromate-producing factory in France between 1958 and 1987, only 16 were lost to follow-up and the number of person-years in the study was 5207. Occupational data were provided by the administration of the plant. The causes of deaths were ascertained from hospital and general practitioners' records. The observed numbers of deaths were compared with the expected numbers based on local rates with adjustment for age, sex and calendar time (standardized mortality ratio, SMR). The overall mortality did not differ significantly from that expected (SMR = 1.20, 95% CI = 0.98–1.47), whereas mortality due to lung cancer was in significant excess (SMR = 3.60, 95% CI = 2.13–5.68). Significantly higher lung cancer SMRs were found for workers whose duration of employment was more than 10 years. A non-significant excess was observed for all forms of digestive tract cancer (SMR = 1.30, 95% CI = 0.60–2.47). There were two cases of brain cancer when 0.24 was expected (SMR = 8.44, 95% CI = 1.02–30.49). No previous report has mentioned an association of brain cancer with chromate pigments; however, because of the small numbers involved, a chance excess should be considered.

    Notes: Summary Xylanase production by Aspergillus niger van Tieghem was studied in solid-state cultivation. The screening of substrates was carried out in column incubators aerated with humidified air at 30°C. Results of physiological studies showed that the best yield of xylanase was 2500 U/g dry matter on a mixture of straw+bran 1:1 at 70% of moisture content. In order to compare some properties of the xylanase produced in both liquid and solid cultures, A. niger was also grown on xylan in submerged cultures. The enzymes produced in solid and liquid cultures have an optimum pH of about 3.8 and 4.5, respectively. Xylanase synthetized in solid fermentation is a little more thermostable than that from liquid culture and is maximally active at 50° C, compared to 45° C for enzyme from liquid culture.

    Notes: Summary β-glucosidase production was studied in solid-state cultivation by Aspergillus phoenicis on sugar beet pulps. The experiments were carried out in column incubators aerated with humidified air, at 30 °C. Results of physiological studies showed that the production of β-glucosidase from beet pulps in the solid state fermentation required : 70% moisture content, initial pH of about 4, and 107 spores/g substrate. β-glucosidase produced under these conditions could be removed from the solid medium with water, or stored in the form of a dried fermented product, for a direct use in the saccharification reactions.

In order to compare some properties of the β-glucosidase produced in both liquid and solid cultures, A. phoenicis was also grown on starch in submerged culture. The enzymes produced in solid and liquid cultures have the same optimum pH of about 4.5. β-Glucosidase synthetized in solid culture is significantly more thermostable than that from liquid culture and is maximally active at 65°C compared to 60°C for enzyme from liquid culture.

    Notes: Summary Anaerobic digestion of sugar beet pulps was studied in a 70 l digestor with sequential feeding, after enzymatic hydrolysis by Trichoderma harzianum cellulases. During the 130 days feeding, 3.6 m3 of biogas were produced with an average content of 58% CH4 from 270 l of hydrolysed pulps at 20 g VS/l. Average yield and production rate were respectively 0.67 m3/kg VS and 0.4 m3/ kg VS and 0.4 m3/m3 of digestor per day.

    Notes: Cellulase production from lignocellulosic materials was studied in solid-state cultivation by both static and mixed techniques under nonaseptic conditions. The effects of fermentation conditions, such as moisture content, pH, temperature, and aeration, on cellulase production by Trichoderma harzianum using a mixture of wheat straw (80%) and bran (20%) were investigated. With a moisture content of 74% and a pH of 5.8., 18 IU filter paper activity and 198 IU endoglucanase activity/g initial substrate content were obtained in 66 h. The extension from static column cultivation to stirred tank reactor of 65 L capacity gave similar yields of cellulase.
