Abstract A study is made of the mechanical behavior of ceramics based on ZrO2: a ceramic partially stabilized with MgO and a tetragonal polycrystalline ceramic with an addition of Y2O3. It is shown that the Y2O3-stabilized ceramic is linearly elastic, is characterized by a plane R-curve, and exhibits the fracture barrier effect. The ceramic with MgO is inelastic, has an increasing R-curve, and does not exhibit the fracture barrier effect. Data is obtained on acoustic emission in a study of the ceramics, the sources of the emissions being both microscopic and macroscopic defects.
