Notes: [Auszug] Although mutations that activate the Hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway have been linked to several types of cancer, the molecular and cellular basis of Hh's ability to induce tumour formation is not well understood. We identified a mutation in patched (ptc), an inhibitor of Hh signalling, ...

Notes: To further the understanding of fine particle spouting phenomenon that has not been fully experimentally investigated until now, this article discusses some fundamental aspects of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of fine particle spouting. Using the two-fluid method (TFM) embedded in the commercial CFD simulation package Fluent (Version 6.1), the spouting hydrodynamics of fine particles in a cylindrical-conical spouted bed is simulated and compared with the experimental data of Chen ["Spouting of fine particles at elevated pressure", (M. A. Thesis), Beijing, University of Petroleum, (1999)]. The results show that for the CFD simulation of fine particle spouting, the Gidaspow ["Multiphase flow and fluidization", Academic Press, San Diego, (1994)] model gives the best predictions of the flow pattern and the minimum spouting velocity; the influence of frictional stress is much more significant than for the CFD simulation of coarse particle spouting; the influences of the coefficient of restitution of particles on the fine particle spouting cannot be neglected, identical with the case of coarse particle spouting. Then, some typical hydrodynamic properties of fine particle spouting are simulated using the related models with suitable parameters. The results reveal that the flow regime transition of fine particle spouting is very similar to that of coarse particle spouting, but fine particle spouting is less stable and is limited to a more restricted region; the McNab ["Prediction of spout diameter", Brit. Chem. Eng. Proc. Tech., 17, 532-541, (1972)] spout diameter correlation derived from experiments of coarse particle spouting is also suitable for fine particle spouting; the denser zone surrounding the spout axis in the spouted bed of fine particles is more obvious than that in the spouted bed of coarse particles; the particles in the spouted bed of fine particles are much quickly accelerated to their maximum velocities than those in a spouted bed of coarse particles. These differences are mainly caused by the aggregating tendency of fine particles.

Notes: Continuous zirconia fibers with a nanometer ceramic structure and a tensile strength up to 2.8 GPa were fabricated by pyrolyzing polyacetylacetonatozirconium precursor fibers through a special atmosphere heat treatment. DSC-TGA, GC-MS, IR, SEM, and TEM were used to study the fiber transformation mechanism during heating. Results showed that special atmosphere heat treatment could make the organics in the fibers come out directly without carbonization and remove them almost entirely under 400°C, and the obtained zirconia fibers had few defects, good continuity, and high strength.

Notes: Nickel oxide yttria-stabilized zirconia (NiO–YSZ) anode materials were synthesized via hydrolysis of the corresponding chloride solutions with NH3, NH3+NaOH, and NaOH as precipitation agents. Powder properties such as crystallite size, morphology, and sintering behavior of the final NiO–YSZ materials were also studied. The mechanism of the formation of NiO–YSZ was established for the different co-precipitation techniques by the direct observation of Ni(NH3)n+2 complexes, Ni(OH)2 and NiO at different stages of the synthesis process. A direct relationship between the precipitation agent, the order of calcination from dry sample to final product, the final composition, the crystallite sizes and particle sizes of NiO, and the sinterability of the final products was established. A comparison of the powder and individual component properties indicate that the choice of precipitation agent greatly influences the final characteristics. Ni/YSZ materials prepared by NH3+NaOH precipitation offer higher Ni dispersion and nanocrystallinity of both the Ni and YSZ phases. The conductivity of both prepared materials compares well with mixed-oxide materials of higher Ni content.

Notes: Abstract: Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) mediate T-lymphocyte cytotoxicity and may also induce physiologic apoptosis in breast epithelium associated with menstruation and cessation of lactation. Altered expression may thus be associated with breast carcinoma progression, chemotherapy response, or outcome. We performed a clinicopathologic analysis of immunohistochemical staining for Fas and FasL, as well as bax, bcl-2, glutathione-s-transferase, HER-2 (c-erbB-2), Ki67, P-glycoprotein, p53, and hormone receptors in pretreatment breast biopsies from 34 patients with locally advanced or limited stage IV breast carcinoma who received preoperative (neoadjuvant, primary) chemotherapy followed by lumpectomy or mastectomy. Neoplastic cells expressed Fas in 44% and FasL in 85% of pretreatment biopsies. Fas immunostaining was more frequent in tumors with larger size (p = 0.02) and pretreatment metastases (p = 0.03). Combined Fas and p53 staining correlated with pathologic complete response (4 of 5 CR versus 6 of 29 other, p = 0.02), as did combined p53 and lack of FasL staining (2 of 5 CR versus 0 of 29 other, p = 0.02), but individually Fas, p53, and lack of FasL immunostaining demonstrated only trends to correlation with CR (p = 0.13–0.15). No other biomarkers correlated with chemotherapeutic response. Neither FasL nor Fas expression was associated with the degree of peritumoral lymphocytic infiltration, or with expression of the other biomarkers. Recurrence was more frequent in Fas-expressing tumors (recurrent cases 7 of 10 Fas positive versus nonrecurrent 8 of 24 Fas positive, p = 0.07). In this patient group, Fas expression is associated with aggressive tumor behavior. Biomarker immunostaining correlates weakly with pathologic response to preoperative chemotherapy, in keeping with complex or heterogeneous tumor-drug interactions.

Notes: Abstract This paper briefly reviews several large-scale modeling systems for nuclear power plant accidents in the United States, and summarizes our recent modeling results for the effects of key meteorological conditions, radioactive release characteristics, and evacuation strategies on radiation doses. This work was intended to be useful in the formulation of emergency plans for nuclear power plant accidents. The sensitivity analyses establish a scale for comparing impacts at various locations and over time depending on the variation of those key parameters, and have clear implications for emergency planning.

Notes: Abstract The effect of microvessel endothelial cell (EC) sodding on the patency of Dacron grafts interposed in canine inferior vena cava was studied. EC were harvested enzymatically from canine omentum and isolated by density gradient centrifugation. Preclotted, knitted Dacron grafts were sodded with 〉106 EC/cm2 surface. The results demonstrate significant improvement in patency of sodded grafts placed in the inferior vena cava as compared with control grafts (p〈0.001 in grafts with a distal arteriovenous fistula andp〈0.05 in grafts without a distal fistula). The neointima of the sodded grafts were thinner and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the presence of a confluent layer of EC. In addition, the production of prostacyclin but not thromboxane A2 was significantly enhanced in the sodded grafts as compared with controls. We conclude that microvessel EC sodding of Dacron grafts significantly improves the patency rate and inhibits neointimal thickening of the prosthesis. The mechanism is unknown but may involve a more rapid endothelialization of the graft surface with the potential of producing more prostacyclin and less thromboxane A2.
