Notes: Summary A group of rats presented with acute necrotizing encephalitis. The histopathological picture was the same in all the animals yet the periventricular regions where no morphologically appreciable signs of necrosis or infection could be found, presented with a florid astrocytic response. This periventricular astrocytosis was undetected with standard morphological methods but well-demonstrated with histoenzymatic techniques. It is presumed that these astrocytes originated in the ependyma with a possible cellular contribution from the choroid plexus.

Notes: Summary The localization of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) by scanning with the electron microprobe of Castaing, provides a morphological outline of the normal nerve which can be used qualitatively and quantitatively for comparison with abnormal nerves. The normal saphenous nerves of eight cadavers and the abnormal saphenous nerves of two cases of diabetic neuropathy, were scanned and the results compared.

Notes: Summary SPD calcifications from four cases of Fahr's disease were studied with an electron microprobe of Castaing, and found to contain different elements, among them Zn, Al, Mg. The presence of the elements is underlined not because of presumption as to their importance on the pathogenesis of this disease, but because of their rare identification in cerebral calcifications. Al and Mg have been localized previously in cerebral calcification, but this is the first report of morphological localization of a high concentration of zinc in the brain. Two of these cases had hypoparathyroidism.

Notes: Summary Adult white rats were injected daily for 1 month with aluminum chloride and killed. Aluminum was identified, quantitated, and localized in the brains of these rats. The only detectable anomalies were crystals of aluminum and phosphorus in lysosomes and lipofuscin granules in the cytoplasm of neurons.

Notes: Resume A 10-week-old foetus is reported which has various malformations of the spinal cord and vertebrae at the lower thoracic and lumbo-sacral level, as well as a herniation of cerebellar and choroidal tissue down between the bony rim of the foramen magnum and the medulla oblongata. This would constitute, along with another foetus examined, another variant of the malformation ofArnold andChiari.

Notes: [Auszug] Recent advances in the fluorescent method for the demonstration of catecholamines have opened new possibilities for their histological localization. Interscapular brown fat was examined from normal new-born rabbits, aged 24?48 h, and from littermates which had been given reserpine (0.2 mg/kg) 24 h ...
