Notes: Recent reports have raised doubts regarding the safety and efficacy of the blind subclavian venipuncture technique for intra-cardiac lead implantation. To permit a more lateral entry, we used a simple subclavian venogram performed through the brachial vein of the ipsilateral arm of 22 consecutive unselected patients undergoing had implantation (19 permanent pacemakers and 3 intracardiac defibriUators). A total of 35 leads were implanted (31 left pectoral and 4 right pectoral). Lead insertion by venogram technique was used successfully in all patients. Two inconsequential arterial punctures occurred. There were no pneumotho-races, infections, or other complications. Lateral placement should facilitate lead manipulation and minimize “subclavian crush.” The method of ipsilateral venogram guided lead insertion appears to be safe and reliable and deserves consideration in patients who require permanent lead placement via the subclavian vein approach.

Notes: Abstract We studied the hunting behaviour of Myrmicaria opaciventris (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in order to evaluate if it can be used as a biological control agent against the termites that damage sugarcane plantations. Hunting workers foraged in groups and recruited nestmates at short-range when they encountered large termite soldiers or groups of small termite workers. Differences in prey capture concerned the: (1) means of detection (from a distance or by contact); (2) termite body part seized (small termites seized by the body; large termites by an appendage); (3) percentages of prey abandoned; and (4) use of venom. The sting of the workers is spatulated implying a topical application of the venom on the prey. Large termites were stretched by several workers whose adherence to the substrate is facilitated by well-developed arolia and claws on the legs while others spread venom on the body and carved it up. An adaptation to termite capture was noted with a distribution of tasks between the workers which subdued prey, and those which transported it. In the former case, the workers easily eliminated termite soldiers, successively attacked several termite workers and even captured new individuals while holding the first ones captured between their mandibles before retrieving them all at once. The remaining individuals were retrieved by the transporting workers. Given this particularly effective predatory strategy, we concluded that, under certain conditions, M. opaciventris can be used as a biological control agent against termites.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes the conceptual models used to understand the processes determining plant growth rates in response to environmental changes. A series of experiments and growth models were used at three organizational levels: the specific plant organs, the whole plant and the plant canopy. The energy conversion efficiency and the total plant carbon balance were first examined. The carbon partitioning amongst the plant parts was then studied. The energy conversion efficiency is generally understood. In modelling carbon partitioning it was first necessary to establish the carbon demand for each plant organ. The carbon partitioned amongst plant organs was then calculated in two ways. The first one based on empirical data consisted in defining which organ received the carbon prior to other organs. The second one was based on the relationship between the carbon mass of specific organs and their trophic activity. This hypothesis allowed the optimization of the carbon partitioning in order to maximize the whole plant growth rate. The opportunities to use these theoretical approaches in plant growth modelling are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Lymphocyte adhesion to endothelium, extravasation, and adhesion to hepatocytes are mediatedby adhesion molecules and constitute important steps inthe liver inflammation due to chronic hepatitis C(HCV-CH). We measured soluble intercellular adhesionmolecule (sICAM-1, sCD54), vascular cell adhesionmolecule (sVCAM-1, sCD106), E-selectin (sCD62E), as wellas interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations inthe serum of 22 patients with HCV-CH in comparison to 20seronegative healthy volunteers. sICAM-1, sVCAM-1,sCD62E, TNF-α, and IL-8 but not IL-1βconcentrations were significantly elevated in patients.sICAM-1 and sCD62E correlated with TNF-α andaspartate amino transferases levels. sICAM-1 correlatedwith liver lobular inflammation whereas sVCAM-1, sCD62E, and IL-8 correlated with liver fibrosis.Measurement of soluble adhesion molecules may be an easyway to follow liver inflammation and fibrosis duringHCV-CH.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Consider the following problem: two dice are simultaneously thrown, and these two results are considered: R1 “a 5 and a 6 are obtained”, and R2 “a 6 is obtained twice”. When the question is to compare these two results, we observe an equiprobability bias which leads about 60 per cent of the subjects—students of various formations—to give an incorrect equiprobability response of the two considered results. The present paper is divided into two parts. (1) In the first part, we summarize a series of experiments intended to study systematically the resistance of this bias against variations of various factors. (2) In the second part, we present an experiment carried out by 342 students from which we have characterized cognitive models spontaneously developed. We present and discuss here some of these models and their interest for teaching.

Notes: Abstract Background: Immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) by prosthesis is frequently proposed after mastectomy. However, due to the morbidity of this operation, especially the early implant removal rate, its indications remain controversial. Methods: We have performed 141 IBR by prosthesis (saline or gel-filled implant, tissue expander) in a homogeneous population of patients with extensive intraductal or microinvasive carcinoma, diagnosed after an initial local excision. This prospective study was designed to assess the feasibility and morbidity of IBR for an “ideal” population, allowing wide cutaneous preservation, without preoperative or postoperative treatment. Results: The early prosthesis removal rate (〈2 months) was 0.7%, with only 2.1% of early surgical revisions and 3% of lymphoceles. Cutaneous complications (5%) were significantly correlated with the type of incision. Cosmetic results at 1 year were good or very good in 66% of cases, similar to the percentage observed after delayed reconstruction by prosthesis. Conclusions: In this selected population, IBR by prosthesis did not induce any additional morbidity compared with mastectomy without reconstruction. IBR by prosthesis can be systematically proposed in cases of extensive intraductal or microinvasive carcinoma.

Notes: Non-histone proteins (NHP) extracted from chromatin of two plasmocytoma cell lines, X63-Ag8-653 and Sp2/O-Ag 14, with 0.35 M NaCl are analyzed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These NHP have been fractionated into a high mobility group (HMG) and a low mobility group (LMG) using 2 % trichloroacetic acid (TCA). The HMG which is well-characterized is soluble in 2 % TCA whereas the LMG precipitates. LMG resolubilization is difficult. Only a buffer containing glycerol, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and β-mercaptoethanol enables them to be studied by polyacrylamide SDS electrophoresis. The LMG is clearly differentiated from the HMG by the predominance of high molecular weight proteins and by the high number of molecular species in a wide pH range. In the LMG there are also some diffrences between the two plasmocytoma cell lines. For example, a high molecular weight protein of 100 000 and pI 7.2-8.2 is present in Sp2/O-Ag 14 but absent in X63-Ag8-653. Also noticeable in the LMG proteins is the presence of low molecular weight proteins with high electrophoretic mobility.
