Notes: Summary HLA-typing was performed in two groups of juvenile-onset diabetics, one with (n = 58) and one without (n = 109) a family history of the disease. The association of this type of diabetes with certain HLA antigens (excess of B8 and B15, shortage of B7) was confirmed. No heterogeneiteis could be established between the two groups. This suggests that the aetiologic basis in single and familial cases of juvenile diabetes is the same. The hypothesis, that the B8 associated gene is more penetrant than the B15 associated gene, cannot be confirmed. Haplo-types were determined in families with one and two diabetic siblings. The findings of high haplotype concordance among diabetic siblings was confirmed: concordance of 2, 1 and 0 haplotypes in 7, 5 and 3 pairs respectively. There was a low degree of haplotype concordance between diabetics and non-affected siblings in the families with two diabetics: 2, 1, and 0 haplotypes in 2, 8 and 6 pairs respectively. This led to the hypothesis of negative selection against these HLA-linked “diabetogenic” genes. This tendency was not, however, observed in families with only one diabetic. The report of a high recombination rate in families with juvenile diabetics could not be confirmed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary HLA-phenotypes were determined in 31 (30 unrelated) patients with hemochromatosis and compared to the distribution of HLA-antigens in the general German population. A significant excess of HLA-A3 was observed (76.7% vs. 30.2%). The frequency of HLA-B7 was also increased (53.3% vs. 27.0%). However, the difference did not quite reach the level of statistical significance, when correction for multiple comparisons was made. Our finding are in accord with previous observations for different ethnic groups, indicating an association of IH with the A3/B7 haplotype.

Notes: Summary The results of 20 runs with the IBM Blood Cell Separator for platelet preparation are presented. For anticoagulation a combination of ACD-A and heparin was used. 8–12 liters blood of normal donors were submitted to a continuous thrombopheresis at 1250 rpm (110 g) during 4–6 3/4 hours. The number of platelets obtained was 7.19 (4.02–10.30) × 1011, the volume of the preparation 175 (116–225) ml. The red cell contamination was very low (1:0.0007), the white blood cell contamination (90% lymphocytes) was 1:0.005. The platelet concentration in the circulating donor blood was reduced by 77000 (39500–144000)/mm3; in any case the number of platelets recovered was higher than suggested by the platelet decrease. First clinical experience with transfusion in thrombopenic patients (due to bone marrow disfunction in acute leukaemias) showed a rather good function and survival of the isolated platelets. The advantages of this method within the frame of supportive therapy are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Recruitment of labroid fishes to a lagoonal habitat within each of 7 reefs in the Capricorn/Bunker Group on the Great Barrier Reef was recorded for 2 yr (April 1982–April 1983). The density of recruitment of a species on one reef was not a good indicator of its density on other reefs. There were significant differences in the levels of recruitment between years. For several species, the ranking of reefs according to density of recruitment changed between years and the ranking of the two years changed among reefs. Recruitment varied differently for each species. Southern reefs were ranked more highly than northern reefs overall, but no North-South gradient was apparent. Populations of labroid fishes in the Capricorn/Bunker Group experience unpredictable variations in recruitment.

Notes: Abstract Few estimates of natural mortality have been reported for coral reef fishes, yet this information is essential for predicting the effects of recruitment fluctuations on adult populations. In this study, mortality of adult (10 species) and juvenile (11 species) labrid fishes resident on ten isolated patch reefs in One Tree Lagoon, southern Great Barrier Reef, was estimated by visual censuses covering 30 mo, from November 1981 to April 1984. Numbers of adults of all species declined linearly over this period. Mortality rates differed significantly among species, ranging from 4.9 to 69.5% per annum. Average life-span for fishes that had survived the first year of life varied from 1.6 to 11.5 yr, depending on species. Average juvenile mortality varied among species from 25 to 91.8% per annum and was highest for abundant schooling species. Different cohorts of the same species also experienced significantly different rates of mortality. No clear relationship emerged between the number of new recruits and the number of fishes surviving to one year of age. The influence of recruitment fluctuations on adult populations of labrid fishes may be difficult to predict.

Notes: Objective:  To compare the periodontal disease levels of two distinct indigenous populations of Guatemala, Central America, to determine whether differences exist.Material and methods: Cross-sectional studies were performed in adults from the communities of San Juan La Laguna, SJLL (n = 125) and Tzununa (n = 54). In both cases, full-mouth pocket probing depths (PPDs) and clinical attachment levels (CALs) were measured by a single examiner, and the same examiner was employed in both studies. Recession at each site was derived from PPD and CAL measures. Results: Tooth number did not differ significantly between SJLL and Tzununa (28.0 and 27.2, respectively). With respect to periodontal disease status, the percentage of sites with PPD ≥ 5, 6 and 7 mm did not differ significantly, although mean PPD was significantly greater in the Tzununa sample (P = 0.01). Mean CAL and percentage of sites with CAL ≥ 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm was significantly greater in SJLL than in Tzununa (P 〈 0.005) and the difference increased with age. Mean recession was also significantly greater in SJLL than Tzununa (P 〈 0.005), as was the percentage of sites with recession ≥ 3 mm (P = 0.02), 4 mm (P = 0.002) and 5 mm (P = 0.008).Conclusion: The disease levels differed between these two indigenous Guatemalan communities. Whether this has a primarily environmental or genetic basis remains to be elucidated.

Notes: Objective: To define the subgingival microbial profiles of adult subjects from a previously identified rural community of indigenous Indians in Guatemala, Central America.Materials and methods: A full-mouth periodontal examination was performed in 114 adult subjects from 45 families. Plaque samples were collected from both deep and shallow periodontal pockets and checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization was employed to identify 17 species previously associated with periodontitis or health. Results: Plaque deposits and gingivitis were universal and widespread, and periodontal pocketing 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE290211:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉5 mm was highly prevalent (84% of subjects). Streptococcus sanguis, Actinomyces naeslundii genospecies 2 and Fusobacterium nucleatum were significantly more prevalent in shallow sites. At the subject level, Actinomyces naeslundii and Peptostreptococcus micros were significantly more prevalent in periodontally-healthy subjects. Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans was not detected in any sample. Conclusion: There was no association between periodontal disease status and presence of suspected periodontal pathogens. These latter results conflict somewhat with those from treated populations. However, in this population where extensive plaque deposits and gingivitis are universal, the presence of putative pathogens may be more reflective of the local environment.

Notes: Objectives: This study was designed to determine the periodontal disease status of an indigenous Indian community of rural Central America (San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala), for comparison with results of similar studies in other populations, and with a view to performing future studies to address familial clustering of adult periodontitis.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods & Results:An initial screen of 239 subjects aged 12–75 years from extended families suggested a high disease prevalence according to full-mouth pocket probing depths (PPDs), with more than 75% of subjects with one or more pockets of PPD 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE280709:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉5 mm. A more detailed study was performed in 125 unrelated subjects 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE280709:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉18 years, recording full-mouth PPDs and clinical attachment levels (CALs). The high prevalence of pocketing was confirmed and 90% of adults 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE280709:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉35 years had at least one site with CAL 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE280709:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉6 mm. However, extensive disease was restricted to a small minority, with only 10% of adults 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE280709:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉35 years having 20% or more sites with CAL 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:03036979:JCPE280709:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉6 mm.Conclusion: The study results highlight the importance of performing a detailed examination and appropriate analysis. In both studies, tooth retention was high (mean number of teeth recorded was 26.4 and 28.0 respectively), smoking unusual, and families large and localised to the village. This community thus affords several advantages over populations in developed countries when considering familial studies of adult periodontitis.
