Notizen: Microhardness indentation was used to determine the hardness and the microcrack anisotropy in In-doped gallium arsenide as a function of the doping level, indentation load and temperature. The hardness decreased with temperature from 600 kg/mm2 at room temperature to 50 kg/mm2 at 400 °C. There was no apparent influence of indium doping on the microhardness up to the maximum doping level, 0.41 at. %. However, the [110] and [1¯10] radial cracks emanating from the intersection of the Vickers diamond indentation diagonals varied significantly with temperature (in the range of room temperature to 250 °C) and doping level (up to a maximum of 0.41 at. %). Both crack orientations exhibited a maximum of the crack length at approximately 150 °C. The maximum in the crack length decreased and the spread of the crack lengths with temperature broadened out as the doping increased; the longest crack was 80×10−6 m for the undoped sample and 60×10−6 m for the sample doped to 0.41 at. %.The radial crack lengths varied with load as K=PCn, where n=0.65 at all temperatures except 200 °C, in which case n=0.77. This larger value of n has been associated with a transition in deformation mode at 1N. Scanning electron microscopy of the indentations showed that the [1¯10] cracks were discontinuous, suggesting that healing of these cracks may have occurred.

Notizen: This article compares the nature of phosphorus antisite defects in as-grown and neutron irradiated GaP crystals. Electron spin resonance studies indicate that these defects in both kinds of crystals have identical close neighbors consisting of four phosphorus atoms. Neutron irradiation of GaP introduced an additional defect (called WA1), which is linked to a gallium antisite. Characteristic absorption bands and conductivity of neutron irradiated GaP crystals are discussed as well. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract Controlled microstructures of the two eutectics in the alumina-titania system have been grown using a special electron beam heating technique. In the aluminium titanate-titania system, the eutectic interlamallar spacing λ varies with the freezing rate R as λ=AR −n where n=0.5 and the value of the constant A is 8.5×10−6 cm3/2sec−1/2. Primary plate-like dendrites of aluminium titanate in a matrix of discontinuous aluminium titanate-titania eutectic are formed on solidifying a composition TiO2-20 wt % Al2O3. These dendrites appear to deflect cracks in this ceramic. In the alumina-aluminium titanate system, primary rod-like dendrites of alumina were grown in a ribbon-like eutectic of alumina and aluminium titanate on solidifying a composition Al2O3−38.5% TiO2.

Notizen: Abstract Spheres of nickel, and of nickel containing 0.5,1.0, 2.0, and 10.0 wt % aluminium, all of approximately 100μm diameter, were sintered under vacuum to nickel plates for various times within the temperature range 1000 to 1300° C. Neck growth was determined as a function of time. Values for the exponent of time in the neck growth equation,x/a = At n of 0.19, 0.18, 0.15, and 0.16 were found for the above compositions, respectively. An activation energy of 33 kcal/mole was found for sintering nickel spheres to nickel plates. An activation energy of 69 kcal/mole was found for sintering Ni/1.0% Al spheres to nickel plates. Assuming a surface-diffusion mechanism of material transport, as suggested by Nichols and Mullins, the difference in activation energies is explained on the basis of a difference in surface energy, as reflected in the ease with which vacancies are formed at the surface. Similar reasoning is employed to explain the difference in activation energies found between sintering nickel spheres to nickel plates under vacuum in this research, and sintering nickel wire compacts under a hydrogen atmosphere in work reported by Pranatis and Siegle.
