    Notes: Abstract The thrombogenicity of heparin-bonded and non-heparin-bonded pulmonary-artery catheters was compared by means of pull-out phlebography in a prospective, randomized clinical study of 20 patients in an intensive care unit (ICU). The duration of catheterization averaged 47.4±4.1 h in the heparin-bonded group (10 patients) and 45.7±7.1 h in the non-heparin-bonded (10 patients). Age, clinical diagnosis, mean time required to obtain a stable wedge position, heparin dose administered and clotting indices were comparable between the groups. There was no statistically significant difference in the length of formed thrombi (2.3±1.89 vs 5.88±4.62 cm) or frequency of thrombus formation between the groups. The thrombi originated and propagated from the puncture site. They were mural proximally and formed sleeves in the superior vena cava. Several sleeves stripped off on withdrawal of the catheter. Protection from thrombosis offered by heparin bonding of pulmonary-artery catheters should, therefore, not be overstimated — at least not in long-therm catheterization of ICU patients.

    Notes: Abstract Protoplast fusions were performed between hypocotyl protoplasts of Brassica napus and mesophyll protoplasts of Thlaspi perfoliatum. The two species are members of the Lepidieae and Brassiceae tribes, respectively, in the family of Brassicaceae. Seeds of T. perfoliatum are rich in the fatty acid C24∶1 (nervonic acid), an oil valuable for technical purposes. In the search for renewable oils to replace the mineral oils, plant breeders have been trying to develop oil crops with a high content of long-chain fatty acids. After fusion of B. napus protoplasts with non-irradiated as well as irradiated protoplasts of T. perfoliatum selection was carried out by flow cytometry and cell sorting. Of the shoots regenerated from different calli 27 were verified as hybrids or partial hybrids using the isoenzyme phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) as a marker. Another 6 plants were identified as partial hybrids using a T. perfoliatum-specific repetitive DNA sequence. Slot blot experiments were performed to estimate the copy number of the repetitive DNA sequence in the parental species and in the hybrids. In T. perfoliatum there were approximately 105 copies per haploid genome, and the range in the hybrids was 1–37% of the value in T. perfoliatum. When the nuclear DNA content of the regenerated shoots was analysed we found partial as well as symmetric hybrids. Even though the rooting and establishment of hybrid shoots in the greenhouse were difficult, resulting in the death of many plants, 19 plants were cultured to full maturity. Seeds obtained from 15 plants were analysed to determine whether they contained nervonic acid, and 5 of the hybrids were found to contain significantly greater amounts of nervonic acid than B. napus.

    Notes: Summary The lignin distribution between the middle lamella and the cell wall of spruce fibers has been determined by a new technique based on a mercurization of the lignin and a concomitant determination of mercury by the SEM-EDXA technique. The ratio of lignin in the middle lamella at the cell corners to the lignin in the secondary wall was 2.5±0.6 for latewood and 2.4±0.6 for earlywood. This gives a lignin content of 55–58% in the true middle lamella in the cell corners. The reactivity to mercuric acetate of different wood elements was determined in separate experiments. Fractions enriched in ray cells, middle lamella, and compression wood all reacted at the same rate as the whole wood; about one mole of mercury was incorporated per mole of lignin (C9-unit).

    Notes: Summary A new technique suitable for determination of lignin distribution in hardwoods has been developed. The technique is based on the mercurization of the aromatic nucleus of the lignin and a concomitant determination of the mercury content by the SEM- or TEM-EDXA technique. An incorporation of one mole mercury per mole lignin (C9-unit) was obtained for the birch lignin. The concentration of lignin was found to be about 3 times higher in the cell corners of the middle lamella than in the secondary wall of the birch fibers. The cell wall of the vessels and the ray cells were almost equal in lignin concentration and had about 1.5–1.6 times higher concentration than the secondary wall of the fibers. No specific mass loss of the organically bound mercury during the electron beam bombardment was found under the conditions used in this work.

    Notes: Summary The effect of temperature on the uptake of water by various pulps has been studied at temperatures from 20 to 95°C. In the case of lignin-containing pulps, i.e. pulps which have been chlorite-delignified to various degrees, the swelling increases rapidly above a temperature of 60 to 75°C. For a CTMP where the softening temperature of the lignin has been lowered, a maximum in swelling is obtained at 50 to 60°C. When no lignin is present, as in cotton linters and holocellulose, the temperature has no effect on the swelling but the level of swelling in the holocellulose pulp is very high. It is suggested that the increase in swelling above 60 to 75°C is due to the softening of the lignin, the flow of which makes swelling possible. Below its softening temperature, the stiff lignin restricts the swelling which is primarily promoted by water uptake in the hemicelluloses. Some implications for pulping processes are discussed.
