Notes: Summary The “evolutionary” characteristics of several quadratic functions (based both on the affinities and on the reaction velocities), and of the entropy production per unit time, have been studied for a number of 2-variable open systems of far-from-equilibrium chemical reactions. The first and second order systems were chosen to include: straight line, loop (network), autocatalytic and disproportionate kinetic features. All of the functions examined are closely related in form to the entropy production though they differ qualitatively and quantitatively in the nonlinear domain. By a combination of analytical and computational methods one function, called ℳ, is seen to have the variational properties of a “thermodynamic potential” for all of the systems, relative to their non-equilibrium stationary states. The “homeostatic-like” stability criterion, d ℳ/dt ≤0 is also seen to hold for these systems. The function, a composite property of the system, may be interpreted as a “kinetically-weighted system-free-energy” quantity, which would tend to be minimized during the evolution, in configuration and in time space, of a constrained biochemical system.

Notes: Abstract An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection ofEchinococcus coproantigens in fecal samples from dogs, dingoes or foxes infected with eitherE. granulosus orE. multilocularis. The ELISA was based on protein-A-purified polyclonal antibodies [anti-E. granulosus excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens]. The specificity of the assay as determined in 155 samples derived from carnivores that were free of helminth infection (n=37) or infected with non-Echinococcus cestodes (n=76) or with various nematodes (n=42) was found to be 98% overall. The diagnostic sensitivity was strongly dependent on the homologous worm burden. All 13 samples from foxes harboring 〉1,000E. multilocularis worms and 13 of 15 (87%) samples from dogs or dingoes containing 〉200E. granulosus worms were ELISA-positive, whereas 34 of 46 samples from foxes harboring 〈1,000E. multilocularis and 9 of 10 samples from dogs or dingoes bearing 〈200E. granulosus tested negative. Experimental prepatent infections of dogs withE. granulosus revealed positive ELISA reactions within the prepatent period (10–20 days post-infection) for six animals bearing 〉1,000E. granulosus each; a low worm burden (〈1,000 tapeworms/animal) resulted in ELISA positivity in only 2 of 3 animals at 30 days post-infection at the earliest. All five dogs that had been experimentally infected withE. multilocularis tested positive in the coproantigen ELISA as early as on day 5 post-infection.

Notes: Abstract A continuous propagation of juvenile larch in vitro was based on adventitious bud formation and different cytokinin combinations were tested concerning their effectiveness to induce elongation of adventitious buds. Zeatin (1.5 mg dm-3) combined with kinetin (0.15 mg dm-3) was found to be the best. Development and elongation of buds was achieved on a modified LP-medium. Using this system it was possible to propagate different larchspecies (Larix decidua, L. gmelinii and L. sukaczewii f. multiramosus) continuously. Shoots were successfully rooted and transferred to the soil.
