Notes: Abstract A continuous propagation of juvenile larch in vitro was based on adventitious bud formation and different cytokinin combinations were tested concerning their effectiveness to induce elongation of adventitious buds. Zeatin (1.5 mg dm-3) combined with kinetin (0.15 mg dm-3) was found to be the best. Development and elongation of buds was achieved on a modified LP-medium. Using this system it was possible to propagate different larchspecies (Larix decidua, L. gmelinii and L. sukaczewii f. multiramosus) continuously. Shoots were successfully rooted and transferred to the soil.

Notes: Abstract Inferior mesenteric angiography was carried out in 14 patients with locoregional recurrence following sphincter-saving resection of a colorectal primary tumour in the left hemicolon or rectum. The aim was to check the margins of clearance of the lymphatic drainage. All patients had been operated on electively and with curative intent. All patients had a biopsy-proven recurrence and 11 of the 14 patients (79%) showed residual arteries that should have been resected at primary surgery, and at laparotomy for the recurrence incomplete resection of the lymphatic drainage area was confirmed. In 6 patients the recurrence was resected, in 4 of them with no evidence of microscopic residual disease. From these findings it may be argued that the lymph nodes incompletely resected at primary operation may have been the origin of the locoregional recurrence. Angiography may detect this situation, and may be worthwhile when planning a reintervention.

Notes: Abstract The influence of a new micrografting method in vitro was tested by using long shoot meristems of adult 140 year old European larch trees grafted onto larch seedling rootstocks in sterile peat pellets. Five months after grafting and transfer of grafts to ex vitro conditions, new shoots from sprouting scions were re-established into tissue culture. The propagation behavior of shoots derived from these explants was compared with shoots established via bud culture from the same donor trees. Shoot explants from micrografts multiplied more rapidly than shoots explants from the original adult donor trees. Rooting experiments with cuttings from six micrografted clones resulted in 49.9 ± 11.9% rooting. Cuttings from donor trees invariably showed no root formation. The results confirm a rejuvenating influence of micrografting in larch.

Notes: Various Rochow contact masses have been characterized by catalytic tests as well as by X-ray diffraction with respect to η-Cu3Si percentage and particle size. The presence of η-Cu3Si in the contact masses is neither a necessary nor a sufficient precondition of catalytic activity, but a certain contribution of dispersed η-Cu3Si to the activity cannot be excluded. The results can be explained consistently by assuming highly dispersed or even two-dimensional Cu-Si species, not detectable by X-rays, as catalytically active species. The promoters zinc, antimony and tin do not significantly change the percentage and particle size of η-Cu3Si.

Notes: Yeast protein isolate with 85% of pure protein and 1.2% of nucleic acids in dry matter was isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by a procedure of two pre-treatment steps, acidic extraction and isoelectric precipitation. The application of this yeast protein isolate was limited by its functionality resulting from the partially extreme isolating conditions. An enzymatic partial hydrolysis with Thermitase to a degree of hydrolysis of 5% not only improved the solubility and foaming properties, but also the water binding capacity and the emulsifying properties. The hydrolysate was free of bitter taste and could be applied either in two fractions of different solubility after centrifugation or as a whole product in food systems to improve the physiological and functional quality. The yeast protein hydrolysate had the same or even better properties than conventional protein products.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of Mechanical Activation on Thermal Decomposition of GibbsiteThe influence of mechanical activation on structure and reactivity of gibbsite in dependence on stress mechanism (pressure stress and shearing in vibration-mills, shock stress in disintegrators) is investigated. With increasing mechanical treatment the degree of order is decreased. Mechanically disturbed gibbsite shows changed decomposition series. After mechanical activation and short-time heating there are formed nearly X-ray amorphous Al2O3 with high spec. surfaces. It is possible to transform these alumina into pseudo-boehmite with a very low alkali content. The transformation into pseudo-boehmite is dependent on the degree of order of the mechanically pretreated gibbsite and is independent of the spec. surface of X-ray amorphous Al2O3. The products can be used for the preparation of adsorbents and catalyser components.
