    Notes: Summary Because mast cell proliferation has been reported in disorders of abnormal bone remodeling, we quantitated the number of mast cells in undecalcified section of iliac crest bone from 16 untreated women with postmenopausal osteoporosis and contrasted the findings to values from 10 normal women and 12 normal men. The mean number of marrow mast cells was greater in normal women than men (1.17 vs 0.40 cells per mm2,P〈0.05). Compared to the normal women, osteoporotic women had a greater number of mast cells in the marrow (3.38 vs 1.17 cells per mm2,P〈0.01). However, there was no statistically significant correlation between the number of marrow mast cells and either the patient's age or the severity of the bone lesions, as assessed by histomorphometry. Our findings confirm the association between increased numbers of mast cells and postmenopausal osteoporosis.

    Notes: Summary We have previously demonstrated that ethanol has a direct toxic effect on the rat skeleton characterized by decreased trabecular bone volume. In the present study, we examined the ultrastructure of the distal radial epiphyseal growth plates in these same animals. Eight weeks of ethanol administration to 12 male rats results in serum alcohol levels of 140 mg/dl but did not alter the width or light microscopic appearance of the radial growth plate. Quantitative electron microscopy failed to demonstrate morphologic evidence of toxicity in the skeletal cells. We conclude that although ethanol appears to have a direct effect on rat bone characterized by enhanced resorption, toxicity is not attended by ultrastructural changes in the skeletal cells.

    Notes: Abstract We present clinical, laboratory, radiologic, genetic, and pathologic findings in a 49-year-old man with mixed-sclerosing-bone-dystrophy (MSBD), review the six cases previously reported as “MSBD”, and examine the nosology of this rare bone dysplasia. Our asymptomatic patient showed radiographic changes consistent with osteopoikilosis, osteopathia striata, and melorheostosis and had widespread osteosclerosis of the axial skeleton. Several previous reports of combined osteosclerotic disorders suggest the latter finding represents osteopetrosis, however, histologic examination of our patient's iliac crest excluded that diagnosis. Limited radiographic surveys of his eight children were unremarkable except for isolated bone islands in two sons. Literature review revealed that “MSBD” has actually been used generically to describe the association of a variety of osteosclerotic bone dysplasias when they occur together in a single patient.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of bilateral pseudofractures is generally considered a reliable radiologic diagnostic feature of osteomalacia. We report two women with long-standing bilaterally symmetrical femoral pseudofractures that did not demonstrate the histologic features of osteomalacia upon examination of non-decalcified sections of iliac crest bone. One patient treated empirically for osteomalacia developed evidence of early vitamin D intoxication. We conclude that there is no completely reliable non-invasive diagnostic test for osteomalacia.

    Notes: Abstract Three cases of lytic, calcified epiphyseal lesions with plain film and computed tomography features suggestive of chondroblastoma were imaged by magnetic resonance imaging. Histopathologic correlation was obtained in each case. Two cases of chondroblastoma showed low signal intensity on both short (TR600/TE20ms) and long (TR2500/TE80ms) spin echo (SE) images. The third case, a clear cell chondrosarcoma, demonstrated increased signal intensity on moderately T2 weighted (TR2500/TE40ms) images. These findings suggest that magnetic resonance imaging may be helpful in distinguishing these lesions.
