    Notes: Abstract Experimental results on the optical absorption in Li doped NiO are presented. Upon Li doping, considerable oscillator strength is found to appear throughout the fundamental absorption gap until at 2% doping the d-d excitations usually observed within the gap are completely overwhelmed by these new excitations. Low energy REELS measurements on the same set of samples do not show the same behaviour. We briefly discuss the compatibility of our findings with results of previous electron spectroscopic results and with theoretical scenarios.

    Notes: Abstract Au55 cluster compounds are investigated by optical spectroscopy and TEM. The optical spectra appear to be rather structureless, neither showing a collective excitation resonance nor exhibiting distinct absorption bands known from lower nuclearity clusters. We discuss changes of the electronic properties compared to larger Au clusters affecting both, 6sp electrons and5d-6sp interband transitions, the cluster-ligand-interaction being considered as a charge transfer process. We additionally report on a low temperature instability of the cluster compound, which results in changed optical extinction spectra. A characteristic absorption feature at λ=400 nm is attributed to small, ligand-free Au cluster fragments.

    Notes: Abstract. An experimental photoelectron spectroscopy study is presented highlighting several aspects of importance for the study of deposited metal clusters and particles with photoemission. It is shown that the Fermi level is the correct energy reference for the core level binding energies. The choice of different deposition conditions, well within the range of soft landing, has a strong impact on the outcome of the spectroscopic experiments. Single adatoms as well as clusters deposited with some excess energy display relatively narrow core level spectra at much lower binding energies than previously reported, even when atomic mass selection is not performed. In contrast, single sized Pt19 clusters, deposited onto a thin Ar film before being exposed to the graphite surface show spectral broadening and shifts to higher binding energies. We discuss our results in terms of the cluster substrate interaction and the influence of deposition conditions on the metal adsorbate structure.

    Notes: Abstract Gold cluster compounds were investigated which contain clusters of 55 gold atoms in each unit. The ligands stabilize these clusters and, hence, many-cluster systems can be prepared which mainly show the properties of the single dressed cluster. Experimental results of optical and electron-microscopical investigations are presented and shortly discussed in view of the question whether the clusters are molecular or solid-state like.

    Notes: Abstract We measured XPS and UPS spectra of gold clusters with 55 atoms, embedded in an electrically isolating phosphine matrix, and of gold-phosphine, from which the clusters were chemically derived. Compared to the spectra of bulk gold the valence band spectrum and the core level spectra of the clusters showed shifts of the peaks and the fermi level to higher binding energies. The shift of the peaks could qualitatively be interpreted by a final state effect. We succeeded in a separation of bulk and surface contributions to the core level spectra and in a reasonable quantitative analysis of the valence band spectrum of the clusters. The Au 4f core level spectrum of gold-phosphine showed two peaks at 1.5 eV higher binding energies than the corresponding peaks of the clusters.
