    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a design strategy in which structural components are designed automatically by applying three types of knowledge: knowledge in a design standard; “textbook” knowledge of structural, material, and geometrical relationships; and knowledge representing designer-dependent design expertise. The design strategy selects from the designer-dependent knowledge source the behavior limitations—limit states of an object in a given stress state—to consider, translates the behavior limitations into a subset of corresponding standard requirements, generates a set of constraints from the requirements and the relations in the knowledge-base of “textbook” relationships, satisfies the constraints, and then checks the satisfaction of all remaining applicable requirements. By using this design strategy, it is possible to construct a knowledge-based design strategy that is standard independent, so that the same design process can be performed regardless of which design standard is explicitly represented. The design strategy described has been implemented in a prototype knowledge-based system, SPEX, which has a blackboard architecture similar to, but much simpler than, that of HEARSAY. The blackboard represents the level of abstraction through which a component design progresses. The knowledge-base in SPEX consists of several knowledge sources that perform portions of the component design task. Control of the design process knowledge sources in SPEX is rule-based.

    Notes: Abstract The interdisciplinary courseSynthesis of Engineering Systems has been offered by the Engineering Design Research Center over the last 3 years. Students are exposed to two major paradigms for design synthesis: mathematical programming and knowledge-based expert systems. The former emphasizes the mathematical formulation of optimization problems that involve discrete and continuous variables for the selection of topologies and parameters in engineering systems. The latter emphasizes representations and search techniques for processing qualitative knowledge for synthesis of designs by heuristic classification and hierarchical decomposition. An integral part of the course is a term project in which the students apply both synthesis approaches to a design problem in their domain. The projects deal with different engineering problems, reflecting the disciplinary background of the students. The projects explore a number of different schemes for combining mathematical optimization and knowledge-based approaches. Some use knowledge-based techniques for preliminary screening or as critics of mathematical optimization, while others show a direct comparison between the two approaches. This paper summarizes the experience gained in the course, illustrates representative student projects, discusses major results and conclusions, and provides a perspective for future research needs and educational approaches in this area.

    Notes: Abstract An organizational strategy for design environments,asynchronous teams, is reviewed. Simulated annealing is used to implement the necessarycontracting search behavior of asynchronous teams. An example of an asynchronous team design environment controlled by simulated annealing is given from the building design domain. The simulated annealing algorithm used, which has been modified for distributed use and multi-criteria, non-preference objectives, is described.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a referential scheme for representing and identifying the spatial extent of physical entities of constructed facilities, such as buildings and offshore structures. Using the basic operations of a non-manifold geometric modeler, a set of high-level algebraic operations is defined. The scheme and its algebra are used for modeling the spatial attributes of a facility entity at two levels: primary and secondary. The primary representation uniquely captures an entity's spatial attributes at the “skeletal” level and is used mainly for identifying discipline-independent topological relationships of that entity with others. Secondary representations, on the other hand, are used to provide an entity's discipline-specific geometric attributes. The topological relationships and geometric attributes of facility entities thus need not be explicitly stored, but can be computed on demand by the underlying non-manifold modeler.

    Notes: A two-step approach to finite element ordering is introduced. The scheme involves ordering of the finite elements first, based on their adjacency, followed by a local numbering of the nodal variables. The ordering of the elements is performed by the Cuthill-McKee algorithm. This approach takes into consideration the underlying structure of the finite element mesh, and may be regarded as a ‘natural’ finite element ordering scheme. The experimental results show that this two-step scheme is more efficient than the reverse Cuthill-McKee algorithm applied directly to the nodes, in terms of both execution time and the number of fill-in entries, particularly when higher order finite elements are used. In addition to its efficiency, the two-step approach increases modularity and flexibility in finite element programs, and possesses potential application to a number of finite element solution methods.
