Notes: Abstract A new nitro-octahydrophenanthrenol has been isolated by nitration of a crude 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, which was identified by nmr and X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystallographic and molecular structure confirmed the compound as therac-(4R*,4aS*,10aS*)-4-Nitro-1,2,3,4,4a,9,10,10a-octahydrophenanthren-4a-ol. The crystal was triclinic, $$P\bar 1$$ ,a=10.549(3),b=8.530(3),c=7.131(1)Å, α=107.07(3), β=91.62(3), γ=96.27(4)°. Cyclohexane and cyclohexene rings aretrans-fused and have chair and half-chair conformations, respectively. The molecules are associated by hydrogen bridge between the hydroxyl oxygen and both nitro oxygens.

Notes: Attempts to synthesize stereospecifically menthanethiol (2) and menthyl thiocyanate (3) from suitable electrophilic neomenthyl substrates (4a-c), and a variety of sulfur nucleophiles failed or predominantly led to β-elimination products. Almost quantitative yields of mixtures of 2 and its 3-epimer (8) were obtained by reductive cleavage of (-)-3-menthone ethylene dithioacetal (7), but stereoselectivity was low (ratio of 2/8, 41:59) and the mixture could not be resolved. Recrystallization and subsequent oxidation of the dinitrophenyl sulfides of 2 and 8 allowed the isolation of the dinitrophenyl menthyl and neomenthyl sulfoxides (12 and 13, respectively), and an irresolvable mixture of the sulfones 14 and 15.

Notes: A slit die viscometer (SDV) was built and evaluated extensively. A major advantage of the SDV is the ability to measure in-line rheological data in a continuous fashion, using a setup that most closely approximates the conditions encountered in a real extrusion process. Comparisons will be presented of viscosity data of the SDV to data from a capillary rheometer (CR) and a Rheometrics Mechanical Spectrometer (RMS). Viscosity values as measured on the SDV tend to be lower than those measured on the CR and RMS. Possible reasons for this disagreement will be discussed. The effect of temperature on viscosity, the effect of pressure on viscosity, and the effect of compressibility will be analyzed in detail. It will be shown that these effects can be substantial, particularly with certain types of polymers. Finally, the feasibility of using the slit die viscometer to determine first normal stress differences will be explored.

Notes: Friedel-Crafts acetylation of phenanthrene (1a) in sym-tetrachloroethane yields mixtures of 2-, 3- and 9-acetylphenanthrenes (2a, 3a, 4). The distribution of isomers is found to depend strongly upon the method of mixing the reagents. Acetylation of 9-chlorophenanthrene (1b), performed by a variety of methods and solvents, led mainly to 3-acetyl-9-chlorophenanthrene (3b) (≥85%). Previously unreported 2-acetyl-9-chlorophenanthrene (2b) was found to form up to a maximum 11% in nitrobenzene.

Notes: The thickness distribution in a blow molded product depends on swelling and sagging of the extruded parison. In this paper, the extensional deformation during parison formation process has been described theoretically, using a swelling function and Jeffrey's equation for material viscoelasticity. The heat balance equation has been solved simultaneously to treat the more general case of parison being exposed to ambient conditions. Experiments were carried out on a commercial blow molding machine with three polymers and, in each case, parison deformation was recorded on a videotape. The experimental results of parison sagging and the theoretical results have shown good agreement.
