    Notes: The motion of a spherical particle (with radius 1 to 6 mm) in a viscous fluid is measured using laser interferometry. The typical sensitivity on the measured displacement of the sphere is of the order of 50 nm. The particle is moving on the axis of a closed cylinder. The hydrodynamic interactions between the particle and the walls of the cylinder are compared with the theoretical result of Sano [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 56, 2713 (1987)] valid for a very small sphere. The agreement is excellent for the smallest sphere used in the experiment. The experiment also agrees with the result from the theory of lubrication when the sphere is close to a plane end wall. The effect of the particle roughness appears at small distances. Laser interferometry appears as a useful tool to study particle–wall hydrodynamic interactions when the geometry is cumbersome.

    Notes: The intrinsic convection in a settling suspension is shown to have its origins in the buoyancy of the particle-depleted layer next to the side walls. The convection is calculated using a simple model in which the particles are represented by an excluded volume and by point forces at their centres. A boundary layer approximation is developed for vessels which are much wider than the particle diameter. It is shown that the direction of the convection depends critically on assumptions about the formation of the particle-depleted layer during the placement of the suspension into the vessel. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent, dilute air-solids suspension flow in thermally developing/developed regions were experimentally studied, using a uniformly heated, horizontal 54.5 mm-ID pipe and 43-μm-diameter glass beads. The local heat transfer was measured at 27 locations from the inlet to 120-dia downstream of the heated section over a range of Reynolds numbers 3×104−1.2×105 and solids loading ratio 0–3, and the fully developed profiles of air velocity/temperature and particle mass flux were measured at a location 140-dia downstream of the heated section using specially designed probes, inserted into the suspension flow. The effects of the Reynolds number, solids loading ratio, and azimuthal/longitudinal locations on the heat transfer characteristics and their interactions are discussed through comparison of the present results with the data obtained by other investigators.
