Notes: —Weanling mice were either injected with viruses or fed cuprizone. Changes in total activity of two cathepsins and two β-glycosidases were characteristic of each of the five acute encephalopathies studied. Comparisons made between morphological change and hydrolase activity shows that β-galactosidase and cathepsin A may be useful indices of neuronal degeneration and cellular infiltration into white matter, respectively. β-Glucuronidase appears to be a particularly sensitive index of cellular reactions to injury. Cathepsin D activity does not appear to reflect any one type of neural cell. Although the morphological changes included neuronal degeneration, perivascular cuffing with mononuclear cells, astrocytic hypertrophy and microgliosis none of the experimental conditions mimicked biochemical changes in multiple sclerosis or senile dementia. The measurement of lysosomal enzymes appears to be a more sensitive indication of acute neurological disorder than the screening of brain proteins by polyacrylamide gel clectrophoresisor the measurement of enzymes (acetylcholinesterase, DOPA decarboxylase and carbonic anhydrase) characteristic of neural cells.

Notes: Abstract The velocities in the mixing region of a cross flow jet injected into a freestream were studied in detail with a laser velocimeter. Three jet to freestream momentum ratios were used (3.1, 8.1, 16.2). By purposely seeding the jet and freestream separately (as well as both simultaneously), “marking” the fluid was feasible. Thus, determining the velocities that emanated from the different streams was possible. By methodically analyzing the three sets of dependent data, the size and location of the mixing region was determined. The mixing regions for the three momentum ratios were found to be of different sizes and at different locations. By proper scaling, however, the regions for the three momentum ratios were found to collapse to one scaled region. Because of the intermittent behavior of the mixing, conventional turbulence models for such mixing may not be applicable; however, detailed velocities and turbulence quantities are included for “benchmarking” predictions.

Notes: Abstract Laser velocimetry measurements were made within a laboratory radial vaned diffuser with three different blade configurations. Measurements were made through passages with four, six and eight blades installed at off design conditions. Also, in the eight blade diffuser measurements were made between the blade passage exit and diffuser exit so that the complete secondary flow could be defined. The flow was found to separate from the blades and form large separation zones. The separation zones consisted primarily of two vortices rotating in opposite directions. At the passage exit the separation region encompassed 23% of the circumferential area for the four blade diffuser, 45% for the six blade and 40% in the eight blade diffuser. Separation occurred at 23%, 27% and 50% from the leading edge of the blades for the 4, 6 and 8 bladed diffusers, indicating that more blades better controlled the separation. Turbulence intensities ranged from approximately 5% to 15% in the primary flow and reached a few hundred percent in the secondary flow within the separation regions.

Notes: [Auszug] Evidence of selective changes in the number or state of specific types of neurone has been obtained by measuring the concentration of putative neurotransmitters and their biosynthetic enzymes. Thus there is selective reduction in the concentrations of dopamine6 in the substantia nigra and G ABA7 in ...
