    Notes: This paper empirically examines parameter sensitivity to choice set specification in the context of shopping destination choice, using supermarket choice data from Gainesville, Horida. We estimate parameters of the widely applied multinomial logit (MNL) discrete choice mode) multiple times. Each estimation uses, for all observations, a single randomly selected subset of the universal choice set. The distribution of parameter estimates is examined for specific market segments and choice subset sizes. The results indicate that the parameters of the model can be quite sensitive to the selection of the choice set used in the calibration. However, this sensitivity is not even across all parameters and there are some interesting variations. Distance deterrence and chain image parameters, for example, exhibit much more stability than parameters for store size and store competition. Li addition, model parameters show encouraging stability with relatively small choice sets of seven to ten stores.

    Notes: This paper introduces the mechanism of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) as a new basis for understanding urban growth, Through DLA, urban form is related to the processes of rural-to-urban migration and contiguous growth. However, despite being bused on very simple principles, DLA simulations are shown to have properties found in most urban areas such as negative density gradients and ordered chaotic structures. The paper examines variations in the simulated urban structures produced by different assumptions regarding the rural-to-urban migration mechanism. An important finding is that urban density gradients can occur independently of the generally accepted reasons for their presence. We also comment on boundary effects in the measurement of urban density gradients.

    Notes: The technique of geographically weighted regression (GWR) is used to model spatial ‘drift’ in linear model coefficients. In this paper we extend the ideas of GWR in a number of ways. First, we introduce a set of analytically derived significance tests allowing a null hypothesis of no spatial parameter drift to be investigated. Second, we discuss ‘mixed’ GWR models where some parameters are fixed globally but others vary geographically. Again, models of this type may be assessed using significance tests. Finally, we consider a means of deciding the degree of parameter smoothing used in GWR based on the Mallows Cp statistic. To complete the paper, we analyze an example data set based on house prices in Kent in the U.K. using the techniques introduced.

    Notes: Abstract. The relationship between spatial analysis and GIS has been a debating point for over a decade. Some see GIS as leading the way to a new era in which the desire and the ability to analyse spatial data is widespread, not just in geography but throughout all disciplines in which spatial data are encountered. Others see GIS as simply providing a medium for the recycling of out-dated spatial analytical techniques and models. This paper describes a role for GIS through the development of new forms of ‘local’ or ‘context-dependent’ spatial analytical methods in which the focus is on exceptions to the general trend represented by the more traditional ‘global’ methods.
