    DIFFUSION-LIMITED AGGREGATION AND THE FRACTAL NATURE OF URBAN GROWTH (1989)

    Notes: This paper introduces the mechanism of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) as a new basis for understanding urban growth, Through DLA, urban form is related to the processes of rural-to-urban migration and contiguous growth. However, despite being bused on very simple principles, DLA simulations are shown to have properties found in most urban areas such as negative density gradients and ordered chaotic structures. The paper examines variations in the simulated urban structures produced by different assumptions regarding the rural-to-urban migration mechanism. An important finding is that urban density gradients can occur independently of the generally accepted reasons for their presence. We also comment on boundary effects in the measurement of urban density gradients.

    Notes: Abstract New digital data sources for urban analysis are becoming available, which are far more disaggregate, comprehensive and frequently updated than those used hitherto in regional science. Urban theory in regional science has often been founded upon notions of settlement density that are not fully deliberated in theoretical terms, and which in practice are often shackled to inappropriate and overly coarse zonations. Clearer conception and better measurement of density and the related concept of space-filling are seen as central to applied analysis in regional science. In this spirit we probe the uncertain and ambiguous conception of urban‘density’and space-filling, and illustrate how new data sources permit sensitivity analysis of measurements of these properties. We illustrate our arguments with an extensive, if necessarily preliminary, analysis of some characteristics of a large UK city, including a sensitivity analysis of density profiles and fractal measures.

    Notes: Abstract. The success of GIS has in some ways proved to be a mixed blessing to academic geography. While quantitative geography has developed as a disciplinary specialism over a long period of time, the infusion of GIS has been more rapid and applications-led. Geography has been a consumer, not producer, of mainstream GIS software, and as such GIS may even contribute towards accelerated de-skilling of the discipline. The technology nevertheless provides a crucial means of dealing with the current proliferation of digital data, and has important implications for the future development of geography.
