    Notes: Abstract The effects of two paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) producing dinoflagellates, Alexandrium minutum Halim (high and low toxin strains) and Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, on the pelagic harpacticoid copepod Euterpina acutifrons Dana were tested in a series of experiments run from October 1994 to May 1995. In small volumes (350 ml), both strains of A. minutum (300 to 350 cells ml-1), and G. catenatum (175 cells ml-1), strongly reduced naupliar activity (about 30 and 17% were inactive after 24 h, respectively). Activity is here defined as movement. In medium volumes (6 litre), 40% of nauplii incubated with the high toxin strain of A. minutum (1000 cells ml-1) and 8% of nauplii incubated with cell-free filtrate of the same culture were inactive after 24 h; these values increased to 50 and 30% respectively after 3 d. In large volumes (20 litre), adult copepods incubated with A. minutum (1000 and 10000 cells ml-1) for 5 d revealed only trace levels of PSP-toxins (paralytic shellfish poisoning) in the extracts analysed by HPLC. With both strains of A. minutum (1000 and 10000 cells ml-1), 10 to 15% of the copepods were inactive after 1 to 2 d. It is suggested that E. acutifrons avoids feeding on the dinoflagellates after tasting a few cells, but that the dinoflagellates may exude toxins or other substances that affect the copepods. The inactivating effect of the toxic dinoflagellates on the nauplii was more rapid and stronger than on adult copepods, although strong inactivation and death were also observed in adults with time (up to 80% were inactive after 5 d of incubation with A. minutum). Still, in our experiments a considerable proportion of adult females incubated with the toxic dinoflagellates remained active and were able to produce viable eggs for several days.

    Notes: A method of quantitative analysis of trimethylamine (TMA) and dimethylamine (DMA) in seafoods by gas chromatography (GC) was developed. The amines are separated by using a precolumn of Chromosorb 103 with a main column of Carbopack coated with Carbowax 20M and KOH: a flame ionization detector (FID) and a nitrogen-phosphorous-specific flame ionization detector (NPFID) were used. The effectiveness of the procedure was demonstrated on selected seafood samples.

    Notes: Ability to overcome the resistance of genes H1, H2 and H3 incorporated in potato cultivars was compared in 44 South American and nine European populations of potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.) by recording the development of females on rooted stem cuttings grown in pots in a glasshouse. Most of the South American populations were able to multiply on all the potato plants containing resistance genes, whereas the European populations were unable to overcome the resistance of at least one of the genes. Of particular note, however, was a population of Globodera rostochiensis from Italy which overcame resistance conferred by gene H1. Our results suggest that European populations of potato cyst nematodes contain only a fraction of the genetic variability found in South American populations.

    Notes: Background : Ribavirin is associated with haemolytic anaemia. Antioxidants have been reported to decrease severity of this anaemia.Aim : To determine effect of vitamin E supplementation on ribavirin-associated haemolysis in chronic hepatitis C treated with standard α-interferon and ribavirin.Methods : Fifty-one naive chronic hepatitis C patients were randomized to receive either α-interferon/ribavirin therapy (control) or therapy plus vitamin E 800 IU b.d. with 24-week follow-up. Alanine aminotransferase ALT, haemoglobin and reticulocyte percentage were monitored. Symptoms and health-related quality of life were also monitored at each visit.Results : Forty-seven subjects were treated (27 vitamin E /20 controls). Thirteen withdrew because of adverse effects or non-compliance. Groups were similar in demographics, genotype and baseline lab indices. Comparison with baseline, treatment and follow-up values showed a significant haemoglobin and ALT reduction in both groups. There was no significant difference in haemoglobin and reticulocyte percentage between groups. Sustained viral response was not significantly different between vitamin E (11/18) and control (6/16) groups. Three patients required ribavirin dose-reduction in the vitamin E group compared with two controls. Health-related quality of life during and end-of-treatment was not different between groups.Conclusions : Vitamin E supplementation alone during standard α-interferon and ribavirin therapy does not appear to diminish ribavirin-associated haemolysis.

    Notes: The rheological behavior and stability of oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by different thickening agents were analyzed. Food emulsions were prepared with commercial sunflower oil (40% w/w oil-in-water) and stabilized with 1% emulsifier. The tested thickeners were: (1) 1% w/w xanthan gum (XG), (2) 5% w/w potato starch (PS), (3) 5% PS + 0.5% XG, (4) 1% w/w guar gum (GG), and (5) 0.5% XG + 0.5% GG. Mean droplet size and droplet size distribution (DSD) of emulsions were determined by static light scattering. Steady flow (viscosity versus shear rate), transient flow (viscosity versus time) and oscillatory shear tests (linear viscoelasticity) were performed. The addition of thickening agents improved the stability of the emulsions, the effect was less marked in systems containing only GG. DSD was not significantly modified in emulsions containing starch or hydrocolloids. Microscopic observations showed that all the tested emulsions were flocculated due to the presence of hydrocolloids. The observed shear thinning behavior was attributed to the molecular structure of the polysaccharides and to the flocculation/deflocculation process; viscosity data were satisfactorily fitted to the Cross model. Frequency sweeps showed that emulsions with PS or XG have a weak gel structural network (G’ 〉 G); those with GG correspond to a polymeric solution where G’ and G″ curves intersect within the range of tested frequencies. The viscoelastic linear behavior was described according to the Maxwell generalized model. The discrete relaxation spectrum and relaxation times were estimated from the experimental values of G’ and G″ for emulsions with PS, PS + XG, and XG. Nonlinear viscoelasticity was also studied from stress relaxation curves at different shear strains. The damping function was calculated and the Soskey-Winter parameters were determined. Transient flow viscosities at different shear rates were comparable to the values estimated from stress relaxation measurements.
