    Notes: Abstract Vapor grown crystals of C60 with thin flat triangular, rhombic or trapezoidal shapes of size to 1×2×∼0.001 mm as well as prismastic crystals typically 0.5×0.4×0.2 mm have been grown using a high temperature vapor transport method. Room temperature X-ray precession photography shows these crystals exhibit diffraction patterns consistent with those for either (a) single or (b) twinned crystals of the previously reported face-centered cubic structure or (c) a more complex cell of hexagonal symmetry with a=10.010(2) Å and c=49.064(11) Å. This latter from actually is a multiple twin containing both the face-centered cubic and the close-packed hexagonal structure types. The sharp diffraction maxima for either the single or the twinned crystals demonstrate that they consist of large coherent domains and are essentially free of planar defects parallel to the twin planes.

    Notes: Corollary to the hypothesis that awareness of the conditional stimulus relationships is necessary for the acquisition of differential conditioning, it was predicted that memory for the conditional stimulus relationships (i.e., awareness at retention testing) would be necessary for the retention of differential autonomic conditioning. Groups of 20 subjects each were tested for retention of differential skin conductance and vasomotor conditioning, differential expectancies of the unconditional stimulus, and memory for the CS-US relationships either 1 day or 28 days after initial acquisition. A continuous measure of expectancy of the unconditional stimulus was obtained during initial acquisition and retention testing. Retention testing consisted of a series of unreinforced presentations of the conditional stimuli and a reacquisition series. The 28-day interval resulted in more forgetting of the conditional stimulus relationships and greater retention loss of differential autonomic conditioning and differential US expectancies than did the 1-day interval. Within the group tested after 28 days, retention loss was related to the subjects' post-experimental reports of whether or not they remembered the CS-US relationships. Subjects reporting having forgotten showed complete retention loss of differential autonomic conditioning and differential US expectancies while subjects reporting having remembered showed good retention, similar to that shown after the 1-day retention interval. The hypothesis that memory for the conditional stimulus relationships is necessary for retention of autonomic conditioning was supported. It was also found that long-term memory for the conditional stimulus relationships was related to greater autonomic responsivity during initial acquisition.

    Notes: The electrical noise characteristics of single-walled carbon nanotubes have been investigated. For all three cases of individual isolated nanotubes, thin films of interconnected nanotubes, and bulk nanotube mats, anomalously large bias-dependent 1/f noise is found. The noise magnitude greatly exceeds that commonly observed in metal films, carbon resistors, or even carbon fibers with comparable resistances. A single empirical expression describes the noise for all nanotube samples, suggesting a common noise-generating mechanism proportional only to the number of nanotubes in the conductor. We consider likely sources of the fluctuations, and consequences for electronic applications of nanotubes if the excessive noise cannot be suppressed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of solar microwave bursts have shown fine structures (e.g., the millisecond spikes), not resolvable in time and frequency by existing instruments. In order to investigate these features in greater detail we have developed a spectrometer with high temporal and spectral resolution. The frequency range from 3000 to 4000 MHz is covered by 32 channels with different bandwidths (0.1, 5, and 20 MHz). The instrument is fully controlled by a multiprocessor computer system and allows the recording of about 200 000 measurements per second. Thus it is possible to observe the intensity and the circular polarization of all the 32 channels with a time resolution of about 350 μs. A very flexible frequency selection system allows the use of many different observation modes.

    Notes: Abstract The normal-state transport properties of alkali-metal-doped fullerene crystals are explored. The Hall effect has been measured in KxC60 from room temperature toT c . The electrical resistivityρ for K3C60 and Rb3C60 has been measured over a wide temperature range (20–650 K), and notable differences are observed for the materials at both low and high temperatures. The electrical resistivity of Rb3C60 has been measured in hydrostatic pressures up to 9 kbar. The resistivity is highly pressure sensitive. The transport results give an insight into the normal-state conduction mechanism and thus have consequences for the superconductivity mechanism.
