    Notes: A generalization of the classical ensemble Monte Carlo (MC) device simulation technique is proposed to simultaneously deal with quantum-mechanical phase-coherence effects and scattering interactions in quantum-based devices. The proposed method restricts the quantum treatment of transport to the regions of the device where the potential profile significantly changes in distances of the order of the de Broglie wavelength of the carriers (the quantum window). Bohm trajectories associated to time-dependent Gaussian wave packets are used to simulate the electron transport in the quantum window. Outside this window, the classical ensemble MC simulation technique is used. Classical and quantum trajectories are smoothly matched at the boundaries of the quantum window according to a criterium of total-energy conservation. A self-consistent one-dimensional simulator for resonant tunneling diodes has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Although the different vespid species of the genus Polistes are found all over the world, studies about allergy sensitization to these species have been made mainly in North America. We studied the specific IgE in a large group of sera from patients sensitized to Polistes dominulus (PD) and determined the crossreactivity with another important European Polistes (P. gallicus [PG]) and with five American relevant species of this genus: P. exclamans (PE), P. fuscalus (PF), P. metricus (PM), P. annularis (PAN) and P. apachus (PAP). Studies indicated that 96.7% of sera with IgE positive to PD were positive to PG. No case positive to just PG was found. The comparison of these two European species with the American relatives indicated that most cases were positive to all the insects although there were significant differences in the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) value. These results were confirmed by RAST inhibition studies, and indicate that although the European and American species are closely related, species specific allergenic differences exist. These data suggest that in vivo studies should be carried out in order to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the European venoms compared with the American species.

    Notes: The effects of spacer layer width and asymmetry on the simulation of quantum transport in resonant tunneling diodes are studied. The results show that these layers significantly influence the I–V characteristic, which presents important differences under direct or reverse bias polarity in devices with asymmetric spacer layers. These differences are interpreted in terms of potential profile comparisons of the simulated structures and are in qualitative agreement with experimental data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We studied the effect of adrenaline on the capacity of human neutrophils to attach, ingest and destroy Candida albicans. The neutrophils were incubated in vitro in the presence of an adrenaline concentration taken as basal (10−10 m), and another that is referred to as being reached following physical exercise (10−9 m). Two higher concentrations (10−7 m and 10−5 m), which are seldom attained in blood but which can occur at specific locations in the organism, were tested as having a possible pharmacological application. At the two high concentrations (10−7 m and 10−5 m), the capacity to attach, ingest and destroy C. albicans was greater than at the physiological concentrations (10−10 m and 10−9 m). Indeed, the capacity to attach and ingest C. albicans was significantly less after incubation with these physiological concentrations than the control values (incubation in the absence of adrenaline). Hence, high concentrations of adrenaline seem to enhance neutrophils' phagocytic capacity compared to physiological plasma concentrations, whereas small variations such as those caused by physical exercise have no effect on this functional capacity.

    Notes: To evaluate the safe use of aztreonam (AZT) in patients allergic to penicillins and other betalactam antibiotics we studied 29 patients from a group of subjects allergic to betalactams, diagnosed by presenting systemic reactions after skin tests or challenge tests. Skin tests with benzylpenicilloyl (BPO), benzylpenicilloate, benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephamandole and AZT, radioallergosorbent test (RAST) to BPO and AZT, RAST inhibition and challenge tests were performed. One patient was skin test-positive to AZT, another patient was RAST AZT-positive. IgE antibodies were specific to AZT as demonstrated by RAST inhibition studies with AZT coupled to epsilon-amino caproic acid. Nevertheless, AZT was unable to inhibit either a pool of sera or individual sera positive to BPO. Although all our 29 patients tolerated the administration of AZT (including those with skin test or RAST positive) and AZT appears to be safe in these subjects, this does not indicate that all betalactam-allergic patients tolerate AZT administration

    Notes: An aerobiologic and clinical survey was conducted in Málaga, southern Spain, in order to determine fluctuations of Australian pine (Casuarina) pollen in the atmosphere of the city, and the prevalence of sensitivity in a nonatopic population. The aerobiologic survey, using a Burkard spore trap, was conducted from January 1991 to December 1994, and sensitization was ascertained by the skin prick test. The pollen season is relatively short and the pollen dispersion period occurs during October and November, mainly during the last 3 weeks of October. Diurnal patterns showed that the highest concentrations of pollen occur between 12 a.m. and 2 p.m., the most influential variables in its dispersion being temperature, sunshine, and rainfall. The prevalence of sensitization to Casuarina pollen was determined by skin prick test (SPT) in a nonatopic population of 210 patients with a previous history of autumn rhinitis, asthma, or rhinitis asthma. Six subjects showed a positive reaction to the pollen extracts, and the presence of specific IgE was demonstrated by the conventional radioallergosorbent test (RAST 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:01054538:ALL11:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉2) in five of these patients with positive SPT.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to compare the natural fluorescence in the Harderian glands of the Syrian hamster, rat, mouse, Mongolian gerbil and guinea pig (both sexes). For each species, 10 animals (five males and five females) were used. Histological autofluorescence studies were performed using a fluorescence microscope (450–490 nm filter). Two different types of fluorescent cells were observed in both hamster (type AFI high intensity and type AFII, low fluorescence) and rat (type AFI, low fluorescence and type AFII, high fluorescence) Harderian glands. The fluorescence was basally located in all mice cells, whereas it was observed near the epithelial cell nuclei in the Mongolian gerbil (occupying two-thirds and one-third of the cells in males and females, respectively). A high intensity of fluorescence was present throughout the acinar cells in the guinea pig. The patterns of fluorescence identified exhibited a sexual dimorphism in all species studied. These results demonstrate that the Harderian glands of the animal species examined exhibit a variety of histological autofluorescence patterns.

    Notes: The presence of a cortex and medulla in the superficial pineal gland has been a controversial point in the morphology of this structure in mammals. The published reports indicate contradictory data especially in rodents. In this study the pineal gland of 15-day-old male rats (Rattus norvegicus) were studied, using scanning electron microscopy, in an attempt to determine whether or not a cortex and medulla are apparent in the pineal gland of young rats. The superficial pineal gland of the 15-day-old rat exhibited both a cortex and a medulla; these areas exhibited different structural organizations. The cortex had a thickness of 40–80 μm and the cells did not show a particular arrangement. The center of the gland was composed of a medulla, which had a width of 1000–1200 μm, and consisted of cells arranged in cords; its morphology was distinctly different from that of the cortex.

    Notes: A large group of patients with suspected allergic reactions to (β-lactam antibiotics was evaluated. A detailed clinical history, together with skin tests, RAST (radioallergosorbent test), and controlled challenge tests, was used to establish whether patients allergic to β-lactam antibiotics had selective immediate allergic responses to amoxicillin (AX) or were cross-reacting with other penicillin derivatives. Skin tests were performed with benzylpenicilloyl-poly-L-lysine (BPO-PLL), benzylpenicilloate, benzylpenicillin (PG), ampicillin (AMP), and AX. RAST for BPO-PLL and AX-PLL was done. When both skin test and RAST for BPO were negative, single-blind, placebo-controlled challenge tests were done to ensure tolerance of PG or sensitivity to AX. A total of 177 patients were diagnosed as allergic to β-lactam antibiotics. We selected the 54 (30.5%) cases of immediate AX allergy with good tolerance of PG. Anaphylaxis was seen in 37 patients (69%), the other 17 (31%) having urticaria and/or angioedema. All the patients were skin test negative to BPO; 49 of 51 (96%) were also negative to MDM, and 44 of 46 (96%) to PG. Skin tests with AX were positive in 34 (63%) patients. RAST was positive for AX in 22 patients (41%) and to BPO in just 5 (9%). None of the sera with negative RAST for AX were positive to BPO. Challenge tests with AX were performed in 23 subjects (43%) to establish the diagnosis of immediate allergic reaction to AX, and in 15 cases (28%) both skin test and RAST for AX were negative. PG was well tolerated by all 54 patients. We describe the largest group of AX-allergic patients who have tolerated PG reported so far. Diagnosis of these patients can be achieved only if specific AX-related reagents are employed. Further studies are necessary to determine the exact extent of this problem and to improve the efficacy of diagnostic methods.
