Description / Table of Contents: Summary In four persons of a family the Rh-pattern CwDE (Rhz w) was found and confirmed by family investigations as well as directly by dosage titration. With Anti-C CwDE showed a weak or negative reaction. Here Cw is about 30% stronger than in CwC.

Notes: Summary The vascularization of 50 tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) including 17 meningeomas, 25 neuroectodermal tumors, i.e., astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, mixed gliomas, glioblastomas, medulloblastomas, seven metastatic carcinomas, and one malignant hemangioendothelioma were investigated using biotinylated Ulex europaeus type I lectin (UEA I) in an indirect avidinbiotin-peroxidase procedure. The cytochemical staining pattern of UEA I on paraffin sections was compared with that of biotinylated Dolichos biflorus lectin (DBA), and with the immunocytochemical staining of factor VIII related antigen (F VIII/RAG) by polyclonal antisera using the PAP technique. UEA I visualized the endothelia of blood vessels with equal intensity, sensitivity, and reliability in normal brain and in tumor tissue with neovascularization. While large, medium, and small vessels were equally well demonstrated by UEA I and antibodies against FVIII/RAG, capillaries and endothelial sprouts were stained more consistently and intensely by UEA I. No reliable cytochemical staining could be obtained by DBA regardless of tissue or cell type investigated. It is concluded that UEA I is a highly useful cytochemical marker for the identification of vascular endothelia in paraffin sections of human brain tumors.

Notes: The major erythrocyte membrane (MN) sialoglycoprotein in Mg red cells was found to exhibit a slightly decreased sodium-dodecyl-sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic molecular weight and periodic acid/Schiff staining intensity. Mg antigen activity was shown to be associated with this molecule. As judged from chemical modification experiments, no carbohydrate but the glycoprotein's N-terminal amino acid is involved in the Mg receptor site. The endgroup of the glycoprotein was found to leucine and studies involving Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease suggest that a glutamic acid is located at the fitth position of its peptide chain. This indicates that the Mgs gene complex evolved from a mutation of an Ns allele. An amino acid substitution or deletion at the second, third and/or fourth position(s), preventing the glycosylation of all or some of these amino acids, provides an explanation for the properties of Mg erythrocytes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein Sohn und seine Mutter weisen den serologischen Phänotyp DCc Ee (Rh1 Rh2) auf.
Notes: Summary A son and his mother exhibit the serological phenotype DCcEe (Rh1 Rh2), but their red cells reacted inversely with anti-Ce,-ce and-cE sera. In accordance with this finding the son had a different genotype (RZr) compared with his mother (R1R2). Absorption studies and titrations with an own anti-cE and with commercial anti-C,-c and-e sera revealed different structures of Rh complexes in both persons: c and E react like a single complex in the mother's and like separate factors in the son's red cells. Moreover, titrations with anti-D serum were consistent with homocygote D/D pattern in the mother's and with heterocygote D/. pattern in the son's red cells. The R1R2 type of the mother was found also in other relatives. The legitimate descent of the son and his sister was proved by somatological studies and by statistical analysis of the full grouping, of the serum groups and of the enzyme pattern Ph. Therefore it is assumed, that an overshooting manifestation of antigens during the stepwise enzyme catalyzed formation of Rh pattern is responsible for the son's RZr type and not cross-over.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary ABO and Rh were determined with the Eldon card on 300 samples of umbilical blood. Widely varying types of irregular reactions are described and discussed as the cause of wrong determinations. Panagglutination was observed not only when the erythrocytes were loaded with antibody, but was also caused by umbilical jelly; analysis of this situation was not possible. The reading was often made difficult by drying phenomena and retarded reactions, which are possibly due to the incomplete removal of jelly. Weak A reactions were often difficult to distinguish from unspecific reactions. The direct Coombs test was performed with 150 umbilical bloods on the “compatibility card”. The results did not deviate from those with liquid sera.

Notes: Abstract Microvibration (MV) of the freely hanging and firmly supported lower arm was studied (n = 8) using two accelerometers, one located over muscle tissue (brachioradialis muscle) and one over bony tissue (processus styloideus). Measurements were made in the completely relaxed arm (REST), during arterial occlusion (CUFF) and during mild handgrip (GRIP), first with the arm relaxed and hanging beside the chair and then repeated with the arm supported in a special rest. At REST, ballistocardiac forces were identified as the driving mechanism for the regular MV pattern, whereas actions of local pulse waves (CUFF) could be excluded. During GRIP irregular MV, related to the contraction process, became superimposed on both signals. The MV at REST was sensitive to arm position. In the freely hanging state, when the arm was family coupled to the trunk, ballistocardiac body motion was present over bony tissue, producing a low damped 7–13 Hz resonant response over muscle tissue. In the supported state, the arm became isolated from body motions. Nevertheless, ballistocardiac forces reached the arm, producing smaller oscillatory responses over bone and muscle tissue. Regionally produced MV (GRIP) was not sensitive to arm position, but the spectrum content in the 7–13 Hz region was very similar to REST. From these results it would appear, that a low damped 7–13 Hz resonance process exists in relaxed muscle tissue, which physiologically becomes stimulated by cardiac and muscle forces. From the close relationship of the simultaneous MV waveforms in the supported arm, evidence for mechanical coupling between bone and muscle tissue is given.
