Notes: Abstract Biliary drainage by endoprosthesis, inserted either transcutaneously or endoscopically, is as effective and better supported than percutaneous drainage, but harder to control. Forty-four patients with biliary or pancreatic carcinoma treated by endoprostheses were followed up by ultrasound. Sonography was effective in the demonstration of the drainage effectiveness and the detection of prosthetic dysfunction or eventual complications. Consequently, it may be considered a valuable method to complement the biochemical tests in the monitoring of endoprostheses.

Notes: Abstract The authors report a case of suprahepatic gallbladder associated with hepatomegaly. The ectopic gallbladder was visualized by sonography, computed tomography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography.

Notes: Abstract. We report a case of blunt traumatic right diaphragm rupture with hepatic hernia. The diagnosis was first suggested by an abnormal hepatic location depicted on axial CT. This finding can be considered as a potentially new indirect sign of right diaphragm rupture in patients with blunt trauma. The diagnosis was then confirmed by reformatted CT and MR images.

Notes: Abstract. Self-treatment of chronic headache with suppositories containing paracetamol and acetylsalaicylic acid may lead to serious complications. We report the radiological features of five cases of rectal stenosis following the use of such suppositories. The role of the double-contrast barium enema in suggesting the diagnosis of this complication of a chronic and often unrecognized self-treatment is emphasized.

Notes: Summary Renal pseudotumors will simulate a neoplasm on urography but are histologically composed of normal tissue. Pseudotumoral lesions of the kidney are usually discovered on urography and simulate a neoplasm, but are histologically composed of normal tissue. Various conditions such as foetal lobulation, hypertrophy of the columns of Bertin or large cloisons, nodular compensatory hypertrophy, renal sinus lipomatosis, and compression by blood vessels may simulate tumors of the kidney. It is therefore of the utmost importance to make a clear-cut diagnosis with the help of echography, CT-scan, and in some cases, arteriography.

Notes: Summary Treatment of hypernephroma presenting with atria-caval involvement without distant metastases is a surgical challenge. The procedures used in three different cases are described. In one case the caval thrombus extending into the atria-caval junction was delivered during clamping of the atrium without cardiovascular bypass. In another case the remaining atrial thrombus was removed in a second session with cardiovascular bypass. For the third case cardiac bypass was established immediately to permit safe and complete removal of the atria-caval thrombus. In order to plan the surgical procedure adequately, it appears essential to determine exactly the upper level of the thrombus. In cases with atrial involvement, cardiovascular bypass is advisable to perform radical surgery under the safest conditions.

Notes: Summary Based on a report of 16 patients, the authors describe and evaluate the sonographic aspects of renal inflammatory diseases (RID) in children. In acute disease, thickening of the renal pelvic wall as evidence of pyelitis was the most common pattern demonstrated. Increased renal volume, nontumoral parenchymal area of hyperechnogenicity, abscess-type mass or calcified solid mass (in the case of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis) were other aspects encountered. Related findings included evidence of chronic pyelonephritis (cortical thinning) and of renal malformations. In patients with RID, the role of ultrasound is doubly important. While it is being employed increasingly as a screening test, it is most useful as a follow-up technique to detect complications and assess renal growth. Nevertheless, it should be stressed that ultrasound may be totally normal in cases of RID and complementary examinations (IVP, VCUG and nuclear scanning) are still necessary.

Notes: Abstract ATP-content and adenylate energy charge (AEC) ratios were determined in two polychaete species (Neries diversicolor and Nephytys sp.), sampled in ten stations along the heavily polluted Western Scheldt estuary (N. Belgium, S. Holland). The samples were taken between 27 December 1982 and 6 January 1983. Nereis diversicolor was also sampled in an unpolluted brackish water pond, and subjected to artificial stress by drying the organisms on filter paper. Adenine nucleotide levels were determined using the firefly bioluminescence reaction. The light emission was measured with the integration mode. As the “Constant Light Signal” reagent used contained AMP and probably ADP itself, both myokinase and pyruvatekinase had to be inactivated before the assay. The use of pepsin in acidic conditions to denaturate these enzymes is discussed. For both N. diversicolor and Nephtys sp., a significant relation between ATP-content and fresh weight is found in most samples. Within each species, ATP-content per g fresh weight is dependent on the sampling method, but it is not significantly different between stations. It is higher in Nephtys sp. from the W. Scheldt (130. 8 10-5 g ATP/g fresh weight) than in N. diversicolor from the Dievengat (83.9 10-5 g ATP/g fresh weight). This value in turn is significantly higher than that for N. diversicolor in the W. Scheldt (64.0 10-5 g ATP/g fresh weight). In the drying experiment, AEC gradually decreases with increasing drying time. In the field, AEC is generally high and not significantly different between the three populations. AEC ratios also do not differ between stations within each population. It is argued that field monitoring of AEC in invertebrates is not valuable as a pollution assessment tool for two reasons. In polluted stations, only pollutant-resistant species will be found, and there is evidence that the maintenance of a stable population is impossible when the individuals constantly have low AECs.

Notes: Abstract We report two cases of antenatal diagnosis of pulmonary tumours. In one case a bronchogenic cyst was connected with the bronchopulmonary tree and grew rapidly after birth. Thanks to the antenatal diagnosis, it was resected before any complication appeared. In the second case, congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung was associated with fetal anasarca. Initially cyst aspiration was carried out; then long-term drainage was attempted. These cases illustrate the impact of antenatal diagnosis on perinatal management.
