Abstract A 6.1 kilobase DNA fragment has been cloned from Pseudomonas stutzeri AN11, a naphthalene- degrading marine isolate. The cloned DNA constitutively expressed salicylate hydroxylase and catechol-2,3-dioxygenase activities in E. coli, both activities being slightly induced by salicylate. The structural genes have been located in the cloned fragment, which hybridized both with the chromosomal DNA and with a 60 kilobase plasmid of P. stutzeri AN11, and showed homology with the corresponding regions of TOL and NAH plasmids.
