    Notes: SUMMARY1. Previous experiments have shown that the level of sialic acid in the epididymis is influenced by factors originating in the testis.2. To exclude interference from these factors, both orchidectomized and duct-ligated rats were used to study the potential role of prolactin in the epididymis.3. When ovine prolactin was injected in orchidectomized rats, a dose-related increase in the level of sialic acid was observed in the epididymis.4. That this action of prolactin is independent of androgen was confirmed by studies using bromocryptine, which decreases circulating endogenous prolactin.5. The physiological role(s) of epididymal sialic acid production in response to prolactin remain to be established.

    Notes: Methods for estimating the properties of electrolytic solutions are reviewed, with emphasis on molecule-molecule, molecule-ion, and ion-ion interactions. The algorithms of Parts I and II, to search for global minimum in Gibbs free energy, are extended to handle electrolytes and compared with an algorithm using k-values. Results are presented for SO2-H2O and H2S-NH3-H2O systems and agree with experimental values.

    Notes: A phase-splitting algorithm is coupled with the Rand method to improve its efficiency and reliability when the phase distribution is unknown at equilibrium. The coupled algorithm works well to give phase-splits in the metastable region where most stability tests fail. Exhaustive tests show fine performance in the region near liquid-liquid phase envelopes for systems with at least one partially miscible binary pair.

    Notes: Several methods are reviewed for determining compositions in multiphase, reacting mixtures at equilibrium. Wolfe's quadratic programming algorithm is applied and results compared with the Rand method (Dluzniewski and Adler 1972), NASA method (Gordon and McBride 1971) and the George et al. (1976) implementation of Powell's method. For poor guesses in compositions, local and constrained minima in Gibbs free energy may arise, giving incorrect phase distributions.
