Notes: In order to measure the diffusion coefficient of a heated plane airstream, a single laser beam is passed through the jet, perpendicularly to the flow direction. The thermic turbulence in the airstream causes random fluctuations of the refractive index. Consequently, the beam direction undergoes, in the flow, random perturbations. After having traversed the jet, the beam produces a luminous trace on a photoelectric cell placed outside the jet. An experimental setup for measuring the probabilities of the beam impact positions on the cell is described. From the Markovian process model, applied along the whole random path of the beam, it has been possible to compute these probabilities by solving the Einstein–Fokker–Kolmogorov equation. The diffusion coefficient can be determined by adjusting the numerical solution to agree with the experimental results. In addition, the calculation procedure gives the order of magnitude of an integral scale, characterizing the dimension of the turbulent structures in which the propagation of light can be considered rectilinear. A good agreement between the results and the published data obtained by means of the cold-wire anemometer technique proves the validity of the method.

Notes: Summary In cooperation with Dr. Braun (Melsungen) special dowels made of polyglycolic acid were developed. All operations were performed in the hind limbs of rabbits (n = 12) and dogs (n = 12). In 24 extremities the medial collateral ligament of the knee was removed and replaced by a tendon. In 12 extremities the cartilage or osteochondral fragment was shorn off and reattached by dowels. Follow-up studies showed good healing. No inflammation or foreign-body reaction was seen. These results lead us to assume that resorbable material can be applied in reconstructive surgery of the hand, joints, and bones.

Notes: Abstract Idiopathic fibrosing pancreatitis is a chronic process of unknown etiology characterized by extensive infiltration of the pancreatic parenchyma by fibrous tissue [1, 2]. This disease process is uncommon in the pediatric patient and is consequently rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain and jaundice in the child. The sonographic demonstration of a dilated biliary tree and common bile duct compressed by an enlarged pancreas may be the first suggestion of this entity. Two patients with idiopathic fibrosing pancreatitis and obstructive jaundice are reported with a review of the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic findings.

Notes: Abstract Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is a specific bone dysplasia manifested by hypertelorism, flat nasal bridge, frontal bossing, large head, hypoplastic maxilla, palate anomalies, chronic otitis media, hearing deficits, nasal obstruction, and neurological changes of deafness, facial palsy, ophthalmoplegia, and mental retardation. We will review the clinical and radiologic findings in a new patient from birth to 20 years; this is believed to be the thirty-fifth patient reported. OS-CS is 2.5 times more common in females and occurs as an autosomal dominant condition or a sporadic dominant mutation with patients presenting for evaluation from the newborn period to the fifth decade. Skeletal abnormalities are distinctive including sclerosis of the skull base and calvarium, linear striated densities in the long bones and pelvis, and poor development of the mastoid and sinus air cells. Radionuclide bone scans with SPECT indicated in our patient increased bone turnover which was supported by biochemical findings of increased pyridinoline excretion. The major complications are due to constriction of essential foramina at the skull base. The condition is not lifethreatening but can produce disability.

Notes: Abstract Esophageal atresia with tracheosophageal fistula may be associated rarely with distal esophageal stenosis. Three patients are reported with this combination of esophageal anomalies. In addition the clinical and radiologic features of 24 patients previously reported in the literature are reviewed. Careful evaluation of the distal esophagus during postoperative contrast studies in patients with esophageal atresia should be obtained to exclude distal stenosis. The presence of unrecognized distal esophageal stenosis may lead to complications of postoperative anastomotic leaks, poor healing of the anastomosis, aspiration, and impaction of a solid food bolus proximal to the stenosis.

Notes: Abstract Within this decade it has been determined that primary gastritis in both children and adults is frequently associated with infection of the gastric mucosa withCampylobacter pylori. It is characterized by a chronic inflammatory process in which the mucosa of the gastric antrum is typically most severely involved. Other regions of the stomach may be involved and associated peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenal bulb are frequent. A case ofC. pylori gastritis is reported in which involvement of the gastric fundus and body produced severe rugal hypertrophy that resembled Menetrier's disease.

Notes: Abstract Background: It has been suggested that psychotic symptoms may be distributed along a continuum that extends from normality through depressive states to schizophrenia with increasing level of severity. This study examined the hypothesis that the severity of positive psychotic symptoms increases from normality, through depression/anxiety states to clinical psychosis. Methods: Consecutive general practice attenders completed a self-report questionnaire of 24 items of delusional ideation and hallucinatory experiences and the GHQ-12. The following groups were compared: (1) subjects with a diagnosis of psychosis (n = 57), (2) GHQ cases (n = 245), and (3) GHQ non-cases (n = 378). Results: Quantitative differences were apparent in the great majority of items on delusional ideation and hallucinatory experiences, in that normals scored lowest, psychosis patients scored highest and GHQ cases scored in between. This pattern of differences was apparent for all dimensions of psychosis-like experiences, including the more “schizophrenic” ones, with the exception of Grandiosity (GHQ cases similar to normals) and Paranormal Beliefs (no differences between the three groups). Conclusions: Similar to findings in aetiological research, phenotypic differences between normal controls, patients with anxiety/depression and patients with psychosis appear quantitative rather than qualitative for core dimensions of psychosis.
