Notes: A computer-controlled data acquisition system has been designed and constructed to automate measurement of turbulent velocity correlations in a two-dimensional turbulent wall jet. Measurements are made with a single component laser Doppler velocimeter system in a flow of air on a flat plate with stagnant surroundings. Measurements of a number of turbulence parameters have been completed and compared with existing hot-wire data. The measurements are made at two downstream locations at a Reynolds number, based on slot width, of 14 000. Earlier hot-wire data for a two-dimensional turbulent wall jet in stagnant surroundings show much scatter in the outer region where local turbulence intensities range from 40% to 70%. The laser Doppler velocimeter gives repeatable values and eliminates the bias in hot-wire measurements due to reversing flow and errors in corrections for high turbulence effects. The measured turbulent normal stresses are somewhat higher than those previously reported throughout the flow field. The turbulent shear stress is in good agreement with previous hot-wire results near the wall. Hot wires are shown to indicate low values of the Reynolds stress in the turbulent outer regions where they are affected by strong flow reversals. The new measurements agree well with predictions based on momentum integral methods.

Notes: Abstract A laser-Doppler velocimeter is used in the measurement of high-temperature gas flows. A two-stage fluidization particle generator provides magnesium oxide particles to serve as optical scattering centers. The one-dimensional dual-beam system is frequency shifted to permit measurements of velocities up to 300 meters per second and turbulence intensities greater than 100 percent. Exiting flows from can-type gas turbine combustors and burners with pre-mixed oxy-acetylene flames are described in terms of the velocity, turbulence intensity, and temperature profiles. The results indicate the influence of the combustion process on turbulence.

Notes: Abstract The boiling process in a granular porous medium creates several different layers of the bed — a capillary layer [fixed bed], a cracked layer with horizontal cracks, and a chimney layer with vertical channels. Underneath those layers the bed becomes dry. An analysis is presented to calculate the heights of these different layers.

Notes: Abstract A visualization of the flow on the suction side and end-wall of a passage between two neighboring turbine blades is compared with mass (heat) transfer measurements on the same surfaces. Besides the horseshoe and passage vortices, there are several smaller vortices formed near the junction of blade and end-wall whose origins are discussed. The vortices detach from the end-wall and move up the blade's span. These vortices, sometimes in counter rotating pairs, are responsible for substantial local variations of heat transfer.

Notes: Abstract Mass transfer to a nearly fully developed turbulent flow in a square duct is studied. Measurements are taken either on one or two adjacent walls in the region of a developing mass transfer boundary layer. Effects of the secondary flow on mass transfer are observed near the corners. The effects are initially small, but grow to a significant degree further downstream. The location of the maximum and its lateral spread is affected by the Reynolds number, as well as the adjacent wall mass transfer.

Notes: Abstract Linear and energy theory stability criteria are presented for fluid layers of infinite horizontal extent heated internally by a uniform volumetric energy source. The thermal coupling between the layer and its environment is modeled by a general mixed boundary condition in both the conduction state and the disturbance temperature. Rigid-rigid, free-free, free-rigid, and rigid-free boundaries are considered in the computations. For a fixed ratio of upper surface Biot number to that at the lower surface, decreasing the Biot number is strictly destabilizing for both linear and energy theory criteria. A region of possible subcritical instability is found; its size is strongly dependent on Biot number and becomes small for small values of lower surface Biot number and large Biot number ratio. For two rigid surfaces and an upper and lower surface Biot number of 47.5, mean energy transport measurementswithin the convecting layer indicate a critical Reyleigh number close to that predicted by linear theory. Subcritical instability is not observed when finite amplitude disturbances are introduced at a Rayleigh number between the critical values predicted by the linear theory and the energy theory.

Notes: Abstract Studies of film cooling, mass transfer, and flow visualization near the endwall of a turbine blade of a fixed cascade are reviewed. Comparison of the results confirms the complex structure of the flow, including the existence of a number of interacting vortices that dominate the region. The film cooling and mass transfer variations are in correspondence with the observed flow structure.
