    Notes: Summary The morphologic changes of viral leukoencephalomyelitis of goats (VLG), an afebrile paralytic disease of 2–4 month old kids, were studied in 13 naturally infected goats: 11 during the first 5–22 days of clinical disease and two that survived 8 months and 3 years after onset of clinical signs. Lesions in the early clinical phase of the disease included interstitial pneumonia and widely disseminated myelinoclastic perivascular lesions in the brain and spinal cord. In the central nervous system, hypertrophied and hyperplastic reticulin fibers of the vascular sheath encompassed an inflammatory cell infiltrate composed of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages. Occasionally, malacia occurred, and several animals had transverse myelitis. Neuronal necrosis and neuronophagia were not features of the disease. Lesions were most frequent in the subpia and subependyma. Pulmonary lesions were not present in goats that survived the initial clinical phase of the disease, but myelin had disappeared from large areas of the spinal cord and from small foci in the brain. Nodular accumulations of mononuclear cells and small perivascular cuffs were also present in the central nervous system. VLG resembles visna in the topographic distribution and myelinoclastic nature of its lesions. Like visna, it bears some resemblance to post-infectious encephalitis of man.

    Notes: Abstract Detailed analyses of the seasonal changes in pigment composition of Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt growing at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight (UK) between April 1977 and June 1978 are presented. These show a large decrease in pigment content as growth proceeds. Laboratory experiments on the change in pigment content of winter-form plants are also reported. The high pigment contents of the winter-form plants and the dilution of pigments with growth are suggested to permit the rapid extension growth of this alga in the spring.

    Notes: Abstract The alga Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt, a member of the Phaeophyceae, exhibits a growth cycle at Bembridge, Isle of Wight (UK), in which large annual fronds develop from much smaller perennating structures. Seasonal changes between April 1977 and June 1978 in the chemical composition of the alga were recorded. The content of inorganic ions, alginate and the dry weight: fresh weight ratio were relatively constant. Mannitol, laminaran and polyphenolic compounds were at their maxima in early summer (June/July), when the plant was undergoing rapid extension growth. In contrast, the protein content was highest in winter and early spring. It was concluded that the elongation phase which occurred in the spring was not supported by the use of stored polysaccharide reserves, since the amounts present were insufficient for this purpose and increased during the period of most rapid growth.

    Notes: Abstract Salt excretion by glands on the leaves of Leptochloa fusca was studied. The rate of excretion was strongly dependent on temperature up to 39°C, which is near the optimum for photosynthesis in this thermophilic C4 grass. The concentration of salt in the xylem required to sustain the observed rate of excretion was low (about two orders of magnitude less than the external concentration). Salt excretion is concluded to be a secondary mechanism of salt tolerance, with exclusion at the roots being the major mechanism. The rate of salt excretion was strongly dependent on temperature.

    Notes: Abstract The chemical compositions of a number of halophytes from salt marshes on Ynys Môn (Anglesey), Wales, and of some related mesophytes and sand dune plants have been determined. Analyses of the inorganic ions broadly confirmed the existence of a characteristic chemical composition of many monoco-tyledonous salt-marsh plants in that they contain high levels of potassium and relatively low levels of sodium. In contrast to most dicotyledonous halophytes, especially members of the Chenopodiacease, the monocots restrict the entry of inorganic ions and use high levels of soluble sugars to maintain an adequate solute potential. Low calcium levels were not found to be a feature of these plants, as was previously reported. The large amounts of sugars found in the monocotyle-donous plants suggested that they must be located mainly in the vacuoles, in contrast to glycinebetaine which is thought to accumulate principally in the cytoplasm of the salt accumulating Chenopodiaceae. The monocotyledonous halophytes which accumulate proline differ from the normal monocotyledonous physiotype in the accumulation of larger quantities of sodium. Triglochin maritima is one species of this type, and Puccinellia maritima a less extreme example. Spartina spp. accumulating glycinebetaine and β-dimethyl-sulphoniopropionate also have unusually high inorganic ion contents for monocots. Several salt marsh plants contained large quantities of amino acids other than proline. As with ionic composition, the nature of the organic solutes broadly followed taxonomic lines. The usefulness of the physiotype concept is discussed.
