Notes: Summary The author describes a temporary clip which can be controlled remotely from the operative field without the necessity for direct vision. Using this clip one may obstruct the circulation in a particular district. This would be of especial importance if an unexpected intracerebral haemorrhage were to occur.

Notes: Hydroxychloroquine and phlebotomy were compared in the treatment of porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). Thirty patients received hydroxychloroquine (200 mg twice weekly) for 1 year and thirty-one underwent twice-monthly phlebotomies of 400 ml whole blood each, also for 1 year. Clinical signs of disease improved equally in both groups. At the end of the year, urinary porphyrin excretion had significantly improved in twenty-two out of thirty hydroxychloroquine- treated subjects, but in only eight out of the thirty-one patients who received phlebotomy. Liver histology showed significant regression of steatosis and siderosis in both groups compared with the pretrial biopsy, but the activity of liver disease, as judged by the extent of necrosis, inflammation and fibrosis, worsened in twelve hydroxychloroquine and in seven phlebotomy-treated patients. It is concluded that hydroxychloroquine is more effective than phlebotomy in decreasing porphyrin production. However, further work is needed to assess whether long-term hydroxychloroquine treatment favours the progression of the chronic liver disease associated with PCT.

Notes: Abstract. The exchange of low-lying collective vibrations between pairs of nucleons moving in time reversal states close to the Fermi energy provides a conspicuous contribution to the nuclear pairing interaction, which accounts for 30-50% of the pairing gap in the case of nuclei along the stability valley, and to essentially all of the pairing correlations of the most loosely bound nucleons in the case of halo nuclei.

Notes: Abstract. We calculate, for the first time, the state-dependent pairing gap of a finite nucleus (120Sn) diagonalizing the bare nucleon-nucleon potential (Argonne v 14) in a Hartree-Fock basis (with effective k-mass $m_k \approx 0.7 m$ ), within the framework of the generalized Bogoliubov-Valatin approximation including scattering states up to 800 MeV above the Fermi energy to achieve convergence. The resulting gap accounts for about half of the experimental gap. The combined effect of the bare nucleon-nucleon potential and of the induced pairing interaction arising from the exchange of low-lying surface vibrations between nucleons moving in time-reversal states close to the Fermi energy accounts for the experimental gap.

Notes: Summary The authors studied in vitro the variations of erythrocyte ALA D activity in subjects exposed and not exposed to lead risk before and after three tests: heat treatment at 60° C for five minutes, addition of GSH (1 × 10−2 mol/1) and of zinc (1.5 × 10−4 mol/1). A study of the ratios before and after treatments showed that GSH and zinc were better than heating in identifying false positives, and that zinc was preferable, owing to lesser dispersion of results around the mean. The ratio of ALA D activity before and after treatment is more closely correlated with PbB levels than ALA D activity without treatment. The addition of GSH restored the enzyme activity of the exposed subjects to values equal to those obtained with heating; this did not happen in the nonexposed subjects. It is postulated that, in lead exposure, the metal acts only on the thiol groups, which may then be reactivated by an optimal concentration of GSH.

Notes: Summary Exposure to toluene was studied in a group of 14 subjects working in a printing industry, who were exposed to this solvent only. Environmental monitoring was carried out using personal samplers for the whole workshift over three consecutive days. Toluene TWA concentrations ranged from 37 to 229 mg/m3. At the end of the workshift on each day of investigation, urine samples were collected for the determination of hippuric acid and ortho-cresol. Hippuric acid was also determined for urine before the workshift and on the Saturday and Monday mornings after the end of exposure; hippuric acid was also determined in 16 controls over the same five-day period. At the end of the workshift, hippuricuria levels in exposed workers always turned out to be statistically different from pre-workshift levels and those of the controls. The end-of-workshift hippuricuria levels of exposed workers were significantly correlated with the mean daily environmental concentration (TWA): in the three days of comparative study, we found r = 0.63 (P 〈 0.05) on Day 1, r = 0.90 (P 〈 0.001) on Day 2, and r = 0.87 (P 〈 0.001) on Day 3. Orthocresol turned out to be correlated with daily exposure less significantly than hippuric acid: r = 0.49 (n.s.) on Day 1; r = 0.78 (P 〈 0.001) on Day 2, and r = 0.65 (P 〈 0.05) on Day 3. Using all available data (41 observations), a very significant correlation (P 〈 0.001) was found between the TWA and both metabolites (r = 0.80 for hippuric acid; r = 0.68 for o-cresol). The values of the two metabolites in the end-of-workshift urine samples (41 observations) also turned out to be well correlated (r = 0.70; P 〈 0.001). The authors conclude that hippuric acid is a valid test for evaluating even low exposures to toluene.

Notes: Summary A HPLC method for the determination of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) in urine after derivatization with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone is proposed. The calibration curve for the ketone was linear, ranging between 0.23–10 mg/L, with a detection limit of 0.025 mg/L. The results were compared to those obtained by GC-MS, coupled to the headspace technique. MEK derivatization and the derivative purification processes were verified with respect to the main variables such as reaction temperature, reagent concentration, probable interferences and enrichment phase. The method is simple and reliable and shows a good sensitivity.
