Notes: Abstract  Celiac disease (CD) patients usually express a DQ2 heterodimer, whose chains DQα1*0501/DQβ1*0201, are encoded by the genes HLA-DQA1*0501 and DQB1*0201, respectively. Among the DQ2 carriers, the risk of developing disease was shown to correlate with the number of DQβ1*0201 chains encoded. Studying two separate cohorts of Italian and Tunisian patients, we now show a significant association of celiac disease with expression of either the DQ2 or DR53 heterodimers. The risk is maximal for individuals that carry both DQ2 and DR53 heterodimers. When twenty synthetic peptides overlapping most of A-gliadin sequence were tested for the binding to various purified DR molecules, it was found that DR53 molecules bind selectively and with high affinity (IC50〈1 μM) to A-gliadin-derived peptides. These data suggest that both HLA DQ2 and DR53 molecules are associated with increased genetic risk for CD, and provide a possible biochemical basis for this complex association.

Notes: Abstract Four hundred and sixty-three new diagnoses of coeliac disease in children were made during 1973 to 1986 in our department. The distribution of new diagnoses per year did not show any decreasing trend in the period 1973 to 1986. No changing trend in breast feeding attitudes was found in the region during the same period. Analysis of the clinical pattern showed a constant distribution of age at diagnosis, onset of first symptoms and nature of symptoms throughout the period studied. These data suggest that coeliac disease is predominantly genetically determined and its expression is modulated by individual and environmental factors. The stability of the observed prevalence of the disease is parallel to the unchanging pattern of breast feeding attitudes in the region.

Notes: Abstract A multicentre study to evaluate the susceptibility of Gram-positive cocci isolated from clinical samples, was performed by six centres working in different areas of Italy. We examined 4,544 strainsof Staphylococcus aureus, 4,381 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci and 2,478 strains of enterococci. The following antibiotics were tested: penicillin G, ampicillin, amoxicillin, piperacillin, imipenem, oxacillin, ofloxacin, pefloxacin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, netilmicin, rifampicin, clindamycin, tetracycline, cotrimoxazole, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, vancomycin and teicoplanin. Oxacillin-susceptible staphylococci confirmed their susceptibility to many other antimicrobial agents while oxacillin-resistant strains confirmed their multiple and frequent resistance to antibiotics. Resistance to oxacillin, cotrimoxazole and chloramphenicol was more frequent in coagulase-negative staphylococci than inStaphylococcus aureus. Aminoglycosides, rifampicin and quinolones were more active against coagulase-negative staphylococci than againstStaphylococcus aureus. Enterococci were susceptible to penicillins and imipenem, and moderately susceptible to cipro-floxacin. Susceptibility of 70–79% was observed with high levels of aminoglycosides. Excellent results against staphylococci and enterococci were observed with vancomycin and teicoplanin.

Notes: Abstract The validity of pancreatic enzyme substitution therapy in the two months following diagnosis of celiac disease was investigated. Twenty patients (8 males, 12 females), mean age 14.2 months (group A) received an enzyme substitution preparation. The control group (group B) included 20 patients (9 males, 11 females), mean age 14.5 months, treated with placebo. Before starting treatment, we performed a stratification for age, weight-for-age at diagnosis, and degree of pancreatic insufficiency. The therapies were then administered randomly in double-blind fashion. On diagnosis and 30 and 60 days after commencement of a gluten-free diet with identical calorie intake in both groups, a series of anthropometric variables were determined. After 30 days weight increase in group A patients was significantly higher (in grams) than in group B: 1131±461 vs 732±399 (P〈0.006). Weight-for-age increase also was greater in group A than in group B: 9.2±5.1% vs 5.0±4.0% (P〈0.002). The increase in height Z score, weight-for-height, arm circumference, and subscapular and tricipital fold measurements were greater in group A patients than those in group B, but the difference was not significant. After 60 days of therapy none of the parameters considered were significantly different in the two groups. We concluded that pancreatic enzyme therapy is certainly useful in the first 30 days after diagnosis of celiac disease.

Notes: Abstract Al x Ga1-xAs semiconductors doped with both natural and enriched119Sn have been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) to help to determine the atomic-scale nature of a deleterious, deep-level defect known as the DX center. Spectra have been acquired in the dark at 76 K and under sub-bandgap illumination at 4 or 10 K to distinguish the DX center from the substitutional shallow donor defect. Although electrical differences are clearly detected in these two states, no difference in the Mössbauer spectra are observed. Unexpected high Sn contents, determined by quantitative MS, demonstrate a large non-electrically active Sn fraction in some samples and this may be obscuring the observation of the DX center by both X-ray absorption spectroscopy and MS. Grinding the single-crystal layers into fine powders leads to an Sn defect that is attributed to a surface-oxidized site.

Notes: Reaction of the platinum complex K[PtCl3(NH3)] with NH3 or NH2(CH2)nNH2 in the presence of I- gives the mixed chloroiodoamine complexes cis-[PtCl3(NH3)2] and [{cis-Pt(Cl)3(I)(NH3)2}2μNH2(CH2)nNH2], respectively. These findings prompted an examination of the nature of the reaction of K[PtCl3(NH3)] with I- in detail. Rapid displacement of two chlorides to give the trans-[Pt(I)2Cl(NH3)]- anion is observed with a subsequent slow displacement of the third chloride to give the [PtI3(NH3)]- anion. Concomitant with the formation of the triiodo anion, dimerization occurs, giving the iodo-bridged compound [PtI2(NH3)]2. Correlation of δ(195Pt) and δ(15N) chemical shifts and 1J(195Pt,15N) coupling constants was made with literature values, allowing a complete set of data for the series [PtXn(NH3)4 - n](2 - n)+ with systematic variation of X (Cl,I) to be presented.
