Notes: [Auszug] The donor and recipient strains of Agrobacterium must be well-characterised. Donor strain A. rhizogenes 223, used in a first set of experiments, has the typical biochemical properties of cluster 2 (ref. 5). It cannot produce 3-ketolactose, does not grow anaerobically on nitrate containing medium, ...

Notes: Abstract A linear spatially distributed model of a chain of neurons and interneurons was investigated in relation to the generation of propagated alpha rhythmic activity. It was assumed that the elements of the chain were interconnected by means of recurrent collaterals and inhibitory fibres in such a way that the connectivity functions were assumed to be homogeneous and their strength was an exponentially decreasing function of distance. It was found that such a neuronal chain shows propagation properties for frequencies in the alpha band. The results obtained with the model are in agreement with the phase velocities encountered experimentally. In this way, it was possible to estimate the length of the neural fibres responsible for the phenomenon of propagated activity. The estimates obtained are in good agreement with recent quantitative neuroanatomical data on the circuitry of the neocortex.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Clonidin (0.025–0.25%) wurde lokal am rechten Auge narkotisierter Katzen verabreicht.
Notes: Abstract Clonidine was topically applied to the right eye of anesthetized cats. Unilateral administration induced a fall in intraocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes. This effect is not secondary to the slight fall in arterial blood pressure. Distribution experiments with 14C-clonidine revealed that only minor or negligible amounts of clonidine could be demonstrated in the contralateral eye. The concentrations of the labeled drug determined in the brain after topical application are sufficient to explain the bilateral decrease in IOP by a central mechanism. The IOP-lowering effect of clonidine upon its topical application to the eye is probably of central nervous origin and, therefore, similar to the centrally induced effect on IOP after systemic administration of the drug.

Notes: Abstract Saliva was investigated for its suitability as a biopsy tissue for the determination of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. It appears that there is a significant difference between the activity of the enzyme in patients and controls. However, some controls have very low values making discrimination between patients and controls using a qualitative method impossible. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is a relevant clinical problem in many rural areas in developing countries. Existing methods for determination of the deficiency in blood and hair follicles do not meet the criteria necessary for their large scale introduction in the areas of the world that are concerned by the problem. The present study shows that saliva is not a suitable alternative. Between the three biopsy tissues compared: blood, hair follicles and saliva, hair follicles remain most attractive since their isolation hardly involves the risk of infection. A simplified method for the detection of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in hair follicles that would allow health service workers in the field to determine the carrier status of pregnant women might form the basis for a future kernicterus prevention programme.

Notes: Abstract Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) was injected both intravenously and into the brain stem via the left vertebral artery. Contrary to results obtained with clonidine, neither the fall in intraocular pressure (IOP), nor the arterial hypotension induced by Δ9-THC, were enhanced after the ‘central’ administration of the drug. For clonidine, a central mechanism underlying the ocular hypotensive effect has recently been proposed. This suggestion is based upon the enhanced fall in IOP after ‘central’ administration of clonidine. The pontomedullary area is considered to be the main initial target of this drug. Obviously, the IOP-lavering mechanism of Δ9-THC is different from that of clonidine.

Notes: Summary Some deterministic and stochastic models for the spread of epidemics are studied. Some models are developed, which take into account a constant incubation time, but where the probability of a new infection is more general than in known models.
