Notes: Abstract Iodinated contrast media belong to the most frequently applied compounds in medicine. They exhibit a high polarity and are very persistent against metabolism by the organism and environmental degradation. A sensitive method for the determination of five iodinated contrast media in aqueous matrices is described. Solid phase extraction utilizing Isolute ENV+ material was used for sample enrichment. The contrast media were partially separated on a RP-C18 column, and detection was achieved using electrospray-tandem MS (API III plus and API 365) allowing the sensitive quantitation of these compounds down to the lower ng/L range. The recovery rates generally exceeded 70%, for spiked surface water as well as tap water. The analytes were detected in native samples such as municipal sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent, the river Rhine and even in tap water.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A homologous series of polynuclear compounds containing chlorine were prepared starting from 4-tert-Butylphenol, its halogenated derivatives and formaldehyde. The polynuclear compounds did not contain higher molecular weight byproducts. This was performed by blocking the remaining reactive positions with chlorine. The chlorine atoms were removed after the finished synthesis by hydrogenative dehalogenation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The dehalogenation yielded polynuclear compounds which had been previously synthesized byA. Zinke and his collaborators in another way. TheZinke series was extended by a new nine-and eleven-nuclear compound.

Notes: Summary For laboratory purposes a Raschig-ring packed pulse-column for the continuous counter-current liquid-liquid extraction with solvents less dense than water was designed. The organic solvent used for extraction is redistilled in the apparatus and circulates. The separation layer of the aqueous and the organic phases is fixed by an electronic regulation causing a selenoid valve in the water outlet to shut and to open by means of a sensible relay. The electronic regulator, the selenoid valve, the pulse generator with the drive of its diaphragm, and all important construction details of the column are outlined. Testing the column with the system benzoic acid/water/benzene at room temperature under optimum conditions gave 4,6 theoretical stages or 23 cm for the height of a theoretical stage, respectively.

Notes: Summary Using RP-C18 material in cartridges to preconcentrate natural water samples, a number of important GC-detectable nitrogen containing pesticides can be analysed. This should be a first step to a simple monitoring of these water constituents for which a routine survey proved to be obligate in the near future.
