Notes: Lignin from aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) tissue cultures containing only mature vessels and undifferentiated parenchymatous cells is exclusively of the guaiacyl type normally associated with gymnosperms. This supports the theory that the guaiacyl and syringyl lignin in angiosperm wood is compartmentalized, with guaiacyl lignin in vessels and syringyl lignin in fibers and ray cells.

Notes: The median-polish statistical method was used to test and quantify chloride (Cl-), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, and fluorescence of laundry detergent optical brighteners as indicators of ground-water pollution from septic systems. The septic systems were located in coarse-textured soils over a high water table close to discharge areas in south-central Wisconsin. Parameters were measured monthly for two years in septic tank effluent samples and in water samples collected downgradient from 17 septic systems and from upgradient background samples. The median-polish technique was excellent for comparing hydrochemical data: Cl- was a conservative tracer and the most suitable indicator of contaminant plumes; EC was semiconservative and EC and pH were only acceptable; and fluorescence was unacceptable. Fluorescence as an optical brightener in septic tank effluents ranged between 0.14 and 0.98 mg/1 with an average value of 0.40 ± 0.16 mg/l. In ground water downgradient from the septic systems, fluorescence levels were within the background levels. Natural substances such as humic and fulvic acids were probably the sources of fluorescence in ground water, not optical brighteners, because optical brighteners did not pass through septic systems drainfields. Fluorescence of naturally occurring compounds in ground water was between 〉0.01 and 260 μ/1 with a mean of ≤51± 14 μ/1 expressed as optical brightener. Nitrification in the soil below the drainfields caused ground-water pH values to decrease within a few meters of the drainfields.

Notes: Two groups of new septic systems in coarse-textured soils overlying shallow ground water were monitored for two years to determine the potential of contamination of individual ground-water supply from the use of phosphate- built (PO4) or carbonate-built (CO3) detergents. The distribution of nutrients and chloride in the shallow aquifer were examined to trace contamination from the septic systems. The data were evaluated statistically, and a stochastic nutrient transport model was compiled to simulate ground- water contamination by nutrients for a five-county region. The stochastic modeling of the data showed that neither detergent caused delivery of total phosphorus to ground water in concentrations above 0.1 mg/1 as P. However, total nitrogen was removed more efficiently from systems receiving PC4-built than CO3-built detergents. The total nitrogen from septic systems reached the ground water in concentrations of 39 and 69 mg/1 as N from PO4- and CO3-built detergent use, respectively, The detergent formula has a substantial effect on ground-water contamination by nitrogen from septic systems.

Notes: [Auszug] Values obtained in replicate runs lay between 20 and 60 ng of selenium (as Se) per m3 of air. The variation in levels may be ascribed to differences in the number of copies made and the non-compliance of users of the machine with a request to keep the door of the room closed during the sampling ...

Notes: The growth characteristics of Thermomonospora fusca, a cellulolytic thermophilic actinomycete, are described in terms of growth on pulping fines, a cellulosic waste of the paper industry. A fermentation was developed which substantially degrades this waste, with the residual product of growth containing about 30% microbial protein. This protein, as shown by a preliminary feeding study with baby chicks and by amino acid analyses, appears to be of good nutritional quality and contains no strongly toxic materials. The extracellular cellulolytic enzymes present in the spent broth are discussed in relation to their potential recovery as a by-product of the fermentation, as is also the possible use of the fermentation as a waste disposal system.
