Notes: Summary Eleven patients with diabetic ketoacidosis were given intravenous phosphate in doses (mean 118 mmol; range 83–320 mmol) adequate to maintain normal plasma phosphate, in addition to a standard treatment regime. Prevention of hypophosphataemia stimulated recovery of the initially low red-cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate concentrations (10.6 ±5.8 (SD) μmol/g Hb) after twenty-four hours. In ten control patients (initial concentration 8.1±4.4 μmol/g Hb) treated without phosphate replacement, significantly lower red-cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate concentrations were found between 2 and 6 days after admission (forty-eight hour value for control patients 14.6±1.6 and for phosphate-treated patients 18.9±4.1 μmol/g Hb; p〈0.01). However, no effect onin vivo p 50 or on the availability of oxygen from the blood resulted from the higher 2,3-diphosphoglycerate levels. Maintenance of normal plasma phosphate levels by intravenous phosphate is, therefore, not indicated to improve tissue oxygenation in diabetic ketoacidosis.

Notes: Summary Type 2 (insulin independent) diabetic women were randomly allocated to receive advice for low fat diets or low carbohydrate diets. By 24 h weighed dietary intakes before and after a mean interval of six months, patients in the low fat group had reduced their fat intake from 41% to 31% of total energy, while carbohydrate percentage of total energy intake increased from 38% to 46%. Percentage energy intake from fat and carbohydrate in the control group remained unchanged. Body weight fell in both groups, especially for patients in the low fat group who were obese (weight/height2 ⩾ 28 kg/m2). Mean plasma glucose, HbA1, and triglycerides were unchanged. Mean plasma total cholesterol fell significantly in the low fat group compared with the controls (p 〈 0.001), but there was no significant difference in the small reduction of high density lipoprotein cholesterol observed in both groups. Thus, adherence to low fat diets occurred without deterioration of diabetes and with benefit for weight and total cholesterol.

Notes: Summary Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be a most useful probe of short-range interatomic correlations in a wide variety of materials. The theory of the EXAFS is presented in its simplest form so as to provide the basis for a discussion about the kind and quality of the structural information which can be extracted from EXAFS data. The adequacy of several of the approximations commonly incorporated in this theory is examined with emphasis on those areas of the theory which bear most directly on the analysis of EXAFS data.

Notes: Summary The procedures required in the analysis of extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) data inr space are examined in some detail with reference to comparable operations ink space where appropriate. Since each operation in one space has its exact equivalent in the other, the choice betweenr andk space turns on relative convenience in the particular circumstances of each application. Some potential difficulties are identified.

Notes: X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of single-crystal samples have not been possible due to the appearance of diffraction features in the spectra. To deal with this problem a unique magnetically driven sample oscillator has been designed and built. Its effectiveness in enabling x-ray absorption spectroscopy studies of single crystals is demonstrated. Furthermore, it is compatible with a cryogenic environment in size, mass, and principle of operation.

Notes: We discuss a methodology for the cooperative analysis of optical and x-ray spectroscopies to deduce the thermophysical properties of dilute suspensions of semiconductor nanoparticles in a wide band gap host. X-ray spectroscopy is used to determine concentration and bonding of selected elements. Resonant Raman spectroscopy establishes limits on composition and strain in particles. Analysis of optical absorption, with constraints provided by x-ray and Raman measurements, yields the particle size distribution and concentration. As an example of this approach, we study borosilicate glasses doped with ∼0.1 wt% CdS and heat treated to produce nanoparticles. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe and characterize a new x-ray optical system in which x rays are steered using multiple reflections within hollow glass capillary tubes. The prototype beam-shaping collector/collimator evaluated for diffraction with CuKα x rays in this letter has throughput of 6% and increases the useful x-ray flux by more than a factor of 4 above that of slit collimation with comparable divergence.

Notes: Summary The effects of porcine glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide given by continuous intravenous infusion in normal subjects (n=6) and Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetic patients (n=6) have been investigated. The subjects were studied on 2 separate days after overnight fasts. On each day 25 g of glucose was infused from 0–30 min plus an infusion of either porcine glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (0.75 pmol·kg−1·min−1) or control solution. During the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide infusion plasma glucose values were reduced in normal subjects from 30–60 min (p〈0.01) and in Type 2 diabetic patients at 45 and 60 min (p〈0.05). In the normal subjects insulin concentrations were greater from 10–35 min (p〈0.01) following glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide infusion and peak values were increased by 123%. In the Type 2 diabetic patients following glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide infusion insulin levels were increased from 4–40 min (p〈0.01) but peak values were only increased by 27%. In the normal subjects C-peptide values were greater from 25–45 min (p〈0.01) following glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide infusion and peak C-peptide levels were increased by 82%. In the Type 2 diabetic patients following the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide infusion C-peptide levels were increased from 6–55 min (p〈0.01) and peak values were increased by 20%. Plasma glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide levels were within the physiological post prandial range during the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide infusion. Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide is insulinotropic in normal subjects and Type 2 diabetic patients at physiological concentrations and results in improved glucose tolerance. This insulinotropic effect is less marked in the diabetic patients and may represent insensitivity of the B cell to glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide.
