Summary The measurement of the horizontal componentH of the geomagnetic field by means of the field intensity meter after Förster (hereafter called for short: Förster meter) requires that this meter should he set horizontally and that its direction should correspond with that of the magnetic meridian. When measuring at sea, the required orientation is always disturbed by the motion of the sea. The paper shows how the instantaneous deviations of the Förster meter from the magnetic meridian and from the horizontal plane can be determined with the aid of a revolution indicator, the construction of which is based on the principle of inertia. The theoretic and experimental examination the revolution indicators are subject to, are discussed in detail. If the deviations from the direction are known, it would be possible to determine the correction to be applied to the indication of the Förster meter; a particular convenience is offered by automatic correction; the appropriate circuit-diagram is given. As a characteristic feature of the apparatus it may be mentioned that the Förster meter is mounted in parallel to a system of magnets and is fixed to a vertical axis that is smoothly turning owing to its vertical lift being relieved. The system of magnets has to make the instrument turn into the meridian as well as to produce a magnetic field at theFörster meter which compensates the geomagnetic field. This procedure permits to measure magnetic fields of high sensitivity. Furthermore, there are two revolution indicators mounted to the vertical axis of the Förster meter; both indicators measure the angle of deviation of the magnetic meridian and the tipping angle about the east-west axis. Besides, there are fixed transformers with separated windings to the axis across which the Förster meter and the revolution indicators are connected to the outward circuit. Care is taken, that these transformers cause no mechanical, magnetical, or electrical disturbances. The vertical axis together with all accessory instruments is included in a container filled with a liquid and suspended by Cardan rings. The whole apparatus is cased in a pressure tank; it is tugged at a sufficiently great distance from the research ship. A detailed discussion of the errors shows how much the measuring errors will be reduced by automatic correction.
