Notes: [Auszug] Chirality is a fascinating phenomenon that can manifest itself in subtle ways, for example in biochemistry (in the observed single-handedness of biomolecules) and in particle physics (in the charge-parity violation of electroweak interactions). In condensed matter, magnetic materials can also ...

Notes: Abstract Fe-21.5 wt. %Cr-5.6 wt. %Al oxidation, at 1000°C, in dry or wet oxygen shows that steam has an influence on the oxide-scale growth mechanism. Steam modifies the kinetics of early-stage oxidation. In dry oxygen, an initial fast linear regime is observed during one hour. Under wet conditions, weight-gain curves follow the same parabolic regime over the entire oxidation test. The scale structure strongly depends on the presence of steam in the gaseous environment. With dry oxygen, the scale is composed mainly ofα-Al2O3 after the initial formation ofγ-Al2O3 identified by ESCA and RHEED. The kinetics transient stage corresponds to the necessary time for the internal part of the initialγ-Al2O3 scale to transform into a continuousα-Al2O3 diffusion barrier. Under wet oxygen conditions, transient oxides are identified as (Mg, Fe) (Cr, Al)2O4, MgAl2O4 (orthorhombic), Al2O3 (hexagonal), these oxides transform into MgAl2O4 (cubic), Cr3O4, Fe2O3,α-Al2O3, with time. When water vapor does not change drastically oxidation kinetics, the induced presence of iron and chromium in the oxide scale could be responsible for weakening the protectiveness of alumina scales.

Notes: Abstract. Reliable and precise lifetimes of excited states in 154 Gd and 156 Dy were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique. Excited states of 154 Gd were populated via Coulomb excitation with a 32 S beam at 110 MeV delivered by the FN tandem accelerator at the University of Cologne. For 156 Dy a coincidence plunger experiment was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with the GASP spectrometer and the Cologne coincidence plunger apparatus using the reaction 124 Sn(36 S,4n)156 Dy at a beam energy of 155 MeV. Shape changes previously suggested to appear in the ground-state band (gsb) of 156 Dy and in the s-band above the first band crossing were not supported by the transition probabilities determined in this work. The measured transition probabilities of 156 Dy and 154 Gd as well as the corresponding energy spectra are compared with the predictions of the recently proposed X(5) model and in the case of 156 Dy also with an IBA fit.

Notes: z2 -like surface state of Gd(0001) films was investigated. The exchange splitting amounts to 700 meV at 20 K and decreases down to 400 meV at 300 K. Above 300 K the splitting remains constant. Pure spin-mixing as well as pure Stoner-like behavior can therefore be excluded. Instead, the observations are explained by a local spin-polarization due to the atomic 4f-moments which competes with spin-mixing caused by the thermal fluctuations of these moments.
