    Standardized Assessment of Psychological Well-Being and Quality-of-Life in Patients with Implanted Defibrillators (1997)

    Notes: The ICD has become a standard treatment for patients with malignant arrhythmias. Despite its benefits it may cause additional discomfort to the patients. Thus, quality-of-life needs to be assessed in these patients. Previous studies have used only small samples or unstandardized measures of quality-of-life that do not allow comparisons with other patient groups. The present study used standardized questionnaires for a cross-sectional assessment of psychological well-being and quality-of-life in ICD patients and to compare them to a similar group of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients without ICD. Overall, quality-of life did not differ between both groups, ICD patients being less anxious than the CAD group. With increasing numbers of ICD shocks, however, the percentage of psychologically distressed ICD patients rose from 10% to 〉 50%. Psychologically distressed patients had significantly worse scores on most of the quality-of-life subscales, showed less treatment satisfaction, and more negative attitudes. It is concluded that ICD patients have an acceptable mean quality-of-life and low mean anxiety. However, a relevant subgroup of about 15%, especially patients with frequent shocks, experience psychological distress and reduced quality-of-life and should receive special care.

    Notes: Abstract We demonstrate approaches to the static parallelization of loops and recursions on the example of the polynomial product. Phrased as a loop nest, the polynomial product can be parallelized automatically by applying a space-time mapping technique based on linear algebra and linear programming. One can choose a parallel program that is optimal with respect to some objective function like the number of execution steps, processors, channels, etc. However,at best,linear execution time complexity can be atained. Through phrasing the polynomial product as a divide-and-conquer recursion, one can obtain a parallel program with sublinear execution time. In this case, the target program is not derived by an automatic search but given as a program skeleton, which can be deduced by a sequence of equational program transformations. We discuss the use of such skeletons, compare and assess the models in which loops and divide-and-conquer resursions are parallelized and comment on the performance properties of the resulting parallel implementations.

    Notes: Abstract By combining methods from artificial intelligence and signal analysis, we have developed a hybrid system for medical diagnosis. The core of the system is a fuzzy expert system with a dual source knowledge base. Two sets of rules are acquired, automatically from given examples and indirectly formulated by the physician. A fuzzy neural network serves to learn from sample data and allows to extract fuzzy rules for the knowledge base. A complex signal transformation preprocesses the digital data a priori to the symbolic representation. Results demonstrate the high accuracy of the system in the field of diagnosing electroencephalograms where it outperforms the visual diagnosis by a human expert for some phenomena.

    Description / Table of Contents: The reaction of chlorinated aluminiumalkyls with μ-oxoalkoxides of Titanium yields ternary metal(oxide)chlorides, which are used in combination with triisobutylaluminium (TIBA) for the polymerisation of ethene and propene. The additionally introduced metals effect the polymerisation activity of the catalysts considerably, the highest value exceeding the lowest one by a factor of ca. 20. Characteristic differences in the activity vs. time curves are observed. Likewise, the molecular weights and tacticities of the polymers vary over a broad range. These results may be explained by assuming that active centers of different stability and chirality are generated by incorporation of the various modifying metals.
    Notes: Durch Umsetzung von chlorhaltigen Aluminiumalkylen mit bimetallischen μ-Oxoalkoxiden des Titans wurden ternäre Misch(oxid)chloride erhalten, die in Kombination mit Triisobutylaluminium (TIBA) zur Polymerisation von Ethen und Propen eingesetzt wurden. Die zusätzlich eingeführten Metalle beeinflussen die Polymerisationsaktivität deutlich, die höchste übertrifft die niedrigste um einen Faktor von ca. 20. Auch zeigen sich charakteristische Unterschiede im zeitlichen Verlauf der Aktivität. Die Molgewichte und die Taktizität der Polymeren differieren in einem weiten Bereich. Zur Erklärung dieser Befunde wird angenommen, daß der Zusatz der verschiedenen modifizierenden Metalle zur Bildung von aktiven Zentren unterschiedlicher Stabilität führt.

The structures of these products are determined and the mechanism of their formation is discussed.
    Notes: 2-Amino-3-thiophencarbonsäure-ethylester (3) reagiert mit Acetylendicarbonsäure-dimethylester zu einem Mehrkomponentengemisch, das neben dem erwarteten Michael-Addukt 4 noch die Cycloaddukte 5, 6 und 7 enthält. Die Konstitution dieser Produkte wird ermittelt und ihre Bildung diskutiert.

All compounds possess (17R) configuration (17β-CO, 17α-S). One corresponding D-homo compound has the same stereochemistry (17aR).
    Notes: Mit IR-, CD-, 1H-NMR- und Massen-Spektrometrie sowie Röntgenstrukturanalyse wurden die Strukturen von sieben Androstan-17-spiro-3′-(1′,2′-dithiolan)-4′-onen bestimmt. Alle Verbindungen besitzen (17R)-Konfiguration (17β-CO, 17α-S). Gleiche Stereochemie (17aR) kommt auch einer entsprechenden D-Homoverbindung zu.

Auf der Basis der röntgenanalytischen Daten wurde der Versuch unternommen, Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede im biologischen Verhalten beim Übergang von der Östran-Reihe zur 13α-Gonan-Serie zu deuten.

    Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of Isomeric N-Methylated (2-Furyl)- and (2-Thienyl)-pyrazolecarboxylates and Their Structure Elucidation by Spectrometric MethodsAddition of excessive diazomethane to (2-furyl)propiolic acid and ethyl (2-thienyl)propiolate, respectively, yields all four possible N-methylated pyrazolecarboxylates. After separation by means of gas chromatography the structures of the isomers were elucidated by 1H-NMR and UV spectroscopy. The gaschromatographically determined ratios of the isomers are discussed.
    Notes: Bei der Addition von überschüssigem Diazomethan an (2-Furyl)propiolsäure bzw. an (2- Thienyl)propiolsäure-äthylester erhält man alle vier möglichen N-methylierten Pyrazolcarbonsäureester. Nach gaschromatographischer Trennung der Isomeren werden die Strukturen durch 1H-NMR- und UV-Spektrometrie zugeordnet. Die gaschromatographisch bestimmten Isomerenverhältnisse werden diskutiert.
