    Notes: Summary The ventral roots L7 and S1 of the owl monkeyAotus trivirgatus, were examined by electron microscopy. On average, these roots contain 2950 and 1837 myelinated axons respectively. In both roots the myelinated axons have bimodal size distributions, but the S1 root contains more small myelinated axons. Both roots contain a substantial proportion of unmyelinated axon profiles (UAP). In the L7 root the proportion of UAP decreases as the spinal cord is approached, from 19% distally to 5% in the juxtamedullary rootlets. Unmyelinated and very small myelinated CNS-type axons have not been observed in the L7 transitional region. The average S1 root contains some 40% unmyelinated axons at all examined proximo-distal levels. Unmyelinated/ very small myelinated axons are easily found on the CNS side of the S1 transitional region, in direct relation to motoraxon bundles. Bundles of unmyelinated and small myelinated axons occur in the ventral pia mater of both segments. The unmyelinated axons in the L7 root of the owl monkey appear to be arranged like those in the feline L7 ventral root, possibly representing afferents. It is likely that most unmyelinated and small myelinated axons in the ventral root S1 are autonomic efferents.

    Notes: Abstract This study examines the fiber composition of two nerves projecting to the rat hindpaw: the lateral plantar nerve (LPN), which innervates plantar glabrous skin and some plantar muscles, and the foot branch of the superficial peroneal nerve (fSPN), which projects to dorsal hairy skin. The LPN contains 872 (33%) myelinated axons with a size range of 1–7 μm and a peak at 4 μm. Some 200 of the myelinated axons are muscle efferents. There are 1,969 (67%) C-fibers. After neonatal capsaicin treatment, the number of C-fibers in the LPN is 61% below the normal level, but it is not significantly different from control levels after chemical sympathectomy with guanethidine. The fSPN is composed of 470 (20%) myelinated axons with a size range similar to that in the LPN. Virtually all myelinated fibers are sensory. There are 1,791 (80%) C-fibers. In neonatally capsaicin-treated animals, the occurrence of C-fibers is 65% below control levels. In chemically sympathectomized animals, the number of C-fibers in the fSPN is normal. This description of the fiber composition of the LPN and the fSPN in the rat provides a basis for future experimental studies.

    Notes: Abstract In view of recent evidence that nerves may be involved in bone formation, the present study examines the local occurrence of axons at the onset of secondary ossification center formation in the knee region of developing rats. Radiographic and histological examination showed that secondary ossification center formation commenced at day 10. At day 15 the epiphyseal ossification had reached a relatively mature state. As seen by light microscopy, cartilage canals first appeared at day 5, reaching the epiphyseal center by day 9. Axons exhibiting a neurofilament-like immunoreactivity emerged from the perichondrial plexa into the cartilage canals. Many calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive and substance P (SP)-immunoreactive axons were found in the canals, as well as in the perichondrium. Axons with tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity were not found in the canals, but such fibers occurred in relation to blood vessels at other sites. The canal-related axons disappeared between days 13 and 15, and the canals themselves did not persist beyond bone formation. As seen in the electron microscope, an individual canal contained 3–10 unmyelinated Schwann cell-enclosed axons with diameters of 0.1–2.0 μm. These observations show that putative sensory unmyelinated axons with CGRP-and SP-like immunoreactivity are transiently present during initiation of bone formation in developing epiphyses. Whether there is a causal relation between transient innervation and osteogenesis remains to be determined.

    Notes: Summary The ventral roots L7 of a cat with an intestinal neoplasm were examined electronmicroscopically at different proximo-distal levels. The proportion of unmyelinated axon profiles was 50–55% at mid-root and distal levels as compared to 30% in normal adult cats. In the juxtamedullary root fascicles the proportion was normal (average 20%), and few unmyelinated axons seemed to penetrate into the CNS through the ventral root. The number of myelinated axons was within the normal range.

    Notes: Summary Longitudinal vibratome slices from glutaraldehyde-fixed adult guinea pig lateral funiculus white matter were incubated in a Gomori medium, stained with ammonium sulfide, osmicated and sectionembedded in Vestopal. Following light-microscopic localization of ring-shaped deposits of reaction product series of thin sections were cut from these areas. In the electron microscope ring-shaped deposits of reaction product were consistently found to surround lamellated myelinoid bodies within glial cells. By following the series some of these cells could be identified as microglia. Sparse aggregates of reaction product were occasionally seen outside myelinoid bodies in typical astrocytes. Precipitates were not related to myelinoid bodies associated with typical oligodendrocytes. The findings suggest that microglia and possibly astroglia participate in the breakdown of spontaneously formed myelin fragments in normal adult white matter.

    Notes: Summary An ultrastructural and morphometric study was performed on sural nerve biopsies of four industrial spray painters (35–59 years) and 11 controls (6–64 years). No difference could be shown in spray painters and age-matched controls as to the number of myelinated nerve fibres per area, their size distribution, variation of internodal length along single nerve fibres or the ratio between the number of myelin lamellae and the axon circumference. There was marked scattering of the two latter parameters in older exposed and control individuals. The distribution of NADH2-tetrazolium reductase activity was similar in exposed and control cases. The general ultrastructural appearance of nodal-paranodal regions in controls conformed with that noted in experimental animals. The overall ultrastructural organization and age-related changes of nerves of exposed cases were similar to those of control cases except for a presence of paranodal axonal mitochondria which contained glycogen-like particles in exposed cases. In one exposed case abundant dispersed or clustered glycogen-like particles were seen in the paranodal axoplasm. These findings are suggested to be an effect of chronic exposure to organic solvent vapours. Ageing seems, however, to have a much greater impact on the morphology of the sural nerve fibre than occupational exposure to organic solvent.
