Notizen: A gas-solid fluidized bed bioreactor has been successfully used for the bioremediation of ethanol (a model volatile organic compound, VOC) contaminated air. A key objective of this fluidized bioreactor study was to compare the performance of fluid bed operation to packed bed operation. A fluid bed system increased homogeneity and improved upon operating problems such as plugging and channelling normally associated with packed bed bioreactors. The bioreactor bed was comprised of a mixture of moist sawdust particles and glass spheres. Depending on the superficial velocity of the waste gas stream, the bioreactor could be operated in either packed or fluidized mode. During fluid bed operation, the sawdust and glass sphere mixture was maintained in a bubbling/slugging regime. As expected, fluid bed operation demonstrated significantly higher mass transfer rates but the maximum elimination capacity was 75 g m-3sawdust h-1 as compared to 225 g m-3sawdust h-1 for packed bed operation. In packed bed mode, higher ethanol concentrations were used in order to have comparable ethanol loadings and this may have contributed to faster growth rates and thus faster bioremediation rates.

Notizen: A pure culture of Pseudoinonas putida was grown in both a batch and continuous culture using phenol as the limiting substrate. Of two substrate inhibition models examined, the Haldane function was found to statistically best describe the kinetics. The applicable kinetic constants were either measured (μM, KI) or estimated (KS) from the experimental data. Particularly in the continuous culture, wall growth was found to exert significant effects on the broth biomass concentration and phenol conversion, both of which decreased with increasing amounts of wall growth. These effects are opposite to those predicted by wall growth models and to experimental results of others using mixed culture (activated sludge) systems.

Notizen: A fluidized bed dryer and drying system have been designed, constructed and operated to produce a powdered formulation of the fungus Penicillium bilaii. The dryer includes an air-shear atomizer and rotatable air vibrator to produce particles which are evenly coated with P. bilaii. The drying system included a humidifier, oven, vacuum pump and instrumentation to ensure precise control of operating conditions. Instant skim milk powder was found to be the best particle source for fixing the spores due to its solubility in water, its highly porous nature and because its moisture isotherms were similar to those of the spores. The dryer was operated at 35°C to maximize the drying rate while still preventing thermal death of the spores. The fluidizing air was best provided at an RH of 30%, thereby producing skim milk/spore particles with just the right amount of moisture to ensure long term storage viability. Storage under refrigeration conditions showed little long term decline in spore viability after 3 months of tests. Room temperature storage demonstrated a small decline rate in spore viability with little significant change if held at room temperature for a few days. © 1997 SCI.

Notizen: Biological air treatment methods are an alternative to conventional treatment methods such as activated carbon adsorption and chemical scrubbing. An external loop airlift bioreactor has been utilized to treat phenol-contaminated air using Pseudomonas putida. Saturated air was found to be cleansed of phenol below the detectable limit because of the high mass transfer rate of the pollutant from the air and the high growth rate of Pseudomonas putida. The bioreactor was found to degrade over 99% of the inlet phenol at rates from 21·5 to 194 mg h-1 at concentrations between 650 and 850 mg m-3 of air. A model of the system is developed based on an initial transient period followed by a pseudo-steady state period. The simulations compared well with the experimental data.
