Notes:
Rosin (colophony) -based resins are a major class of tackifying resins for hot melt adhesives (HMA). These resins are very prone to oxidation. Under ambient storage conditions all types oxidize to varying degrees. As a result of this autoxidation process, considerable concentrations of hydroperoxides can accumulate. The properties of the tackifier resin are significantly effected by these hydroperoxides. When the resin is eventually used in EVA HMA production, these hydroperoxides also adversely effect the HMA properties. Autoxidation of the tackifier resin, under ambient storage conditions, can be effectively suppressed by an appropriate antioxidant. The storage stability of the resin can therefore be improved dramatically, minimizing changes in tackifiers properties.
