Notes: Abstract. A 32-year-old Chinese man with cystic lymphangioma of the transverse colon is described. He presented with a 1-year history of altered bowel habits. Double-contrast barium enema study demonstrated a submucosal lesion in the midportion of the transverse colon with intact mucosa. Computed tomography (CT) showed a round 3.0-cm submucosal cystic mass lesion. Colonoscopy revealed a smooth, soft polypoid mass on a broad base. He underwent segmental resection of the colon. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by cystic lymphangioma originating from the submucosa. The clinical features, radiology, appropriate treatment, and possible pathogenesis of colonic lymphangioma are discussed.

Notes: Asthma is an inflammatory disease with a strong genetic predisposition. We have studied a group of unrelated asthmatic patients of southern Chinese origin on their HLA-DR and -DQ regions using molecular techniques and compared them with 104 healthy controls of the same ethnic origin. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was used to genotype the MHC class II DR β, DQ α and DQ β loci of the subjects. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using sequence specific primer (SSP) for DQ β genes was also performed. No significant difference was found in the HLA-DQ and -DR loci between the patients and the controls. All patients had their serum IgE antibody levels measured, bronchial reactivity assessed by histamine broncho-provocation and cutaneous reactivity to common allergens determined by skin-prick tests to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, mixed grass pollens, Aspergillus fumigatus, cat fur and dog dander and they were classified respectively. The HLA-DR and -DQ genotypes of these subgroups of patients were compared. There was no significant difference among these subgroups of patients according to their serum IgE levels, the degree of bronchial reactivity and whether they were positive for the skin tests for the various allergens respectively. The results suggest that HLA-DQ and -DR genotypes are not associated with asthma in southern Chinese people.

Notes: Abstract The orienting properties of incompressible discotic nematic liquid crystals for creeping flows between converging and diverging planar walls (Jeffrey-Hamel) are analyzed using the Leslie-Ericksen theory. The dependence of director orientation on the reactive parameter λ and the flow kinematics is presented. Closed form stationary solutions for the director orientation are found when elastic effects are neglected. Stationary numerical solutions for the velocity and director fields using the full Leslie-Ericksen theory are presented. The director field in converging flow is characterized by azimuthal (radial) centerline orientation, by being asymmetric with respect to the azimuthal (radial) direction, and by having an allowed orientation range that spans two half-quadrants (full quadrants). In the limiting case of perfectly flat disk (λ ⇒ −∞) the flow-induced director orientation in converging flow is the azimuthal direction, while in diverging flow the director rotates by a full n radians. By reducing the vertex angle between the walls to vanishingly small values, converging flow solutions properly reduce to those of flow between parallel plates, but diverging flows are expected to lead to a new instability.
